The church of the Order of Mercy
  • Tip Rating:
  • The church of the Order of Mercy (Irgalmasok temploma) can be seen on the southern side of Széchenyi square. It was the Capuchin Order, who built the first church and monastery here between 1727 and 1731. In 1786 the Order was dissolved. In 1796 György János Krautszak, tanner and miller donated 25,000 forints to the Order of Mercy to build a hospital. That was the time when a pharmacy was built next to the church. The hospital was completed in 1803. It was enlarged seventy years later.
This is the church I used to go.

    The view from Misina hill-top
  • Tip Rating:

  • The word for hill and mountain are the same in Hungarian (HEGY),
Well the poor Magyars don`t really have any REAL mountains, coming from
Asian Plains years and years ago.

On the Misina mountaintop stands the 175 metre high TV and lookout tower.
Looking down from the top, southwards you can see the town of Pecs
and the Baranya Hills, further the Villanyi Mountains, eastwards the Zengo,
westwards the Tubes, and on the North the Mecsek.

    Barbakán fortress
  • Tip Rating:
  • Built after 1498 after Colonel Kinizsi Pál visited the city, Barbakán fortress, mostly used in the 15-th century and it was part of the wall protecting the city from the Turkish / Ottoman occupations and attacks. During these attacks the citizens of Pecs could seek refuge inside the walls of the fortress. It also has many shooting holes, so guns and other weapons could be fired from the bastion. A large gate connecting the outside with the inside were pulled up and only opened during peaceful periods. Entry to the fortress and the bastion is free, so it's worth visiting this place, when in Pecs.

    Art and architecture
  • Tip Rating:
  • This also applies to Budapest, but in a historic city, such as Pecs, You don't even need to go to a museum to see beautiful art. It's everywhere on the buildings, doors, walls, gates. The entire city is full of outdoor art and many of them are older than my grandfather. Just walk around and look up on the building walls and you will see what I'm talking about...

    Cathedral Pecs
  • Tip Rating:
  • The origin of the Cathedral of Pécs dates back to the time of the Roman Empire. The foundation of the present crypt was built at the end of the 4th century. In the 8th- 9th centuries the building was enlarged at western side. The original church became a crypt in King Stephen's time in such way that the present tabernacle was built above it. The origin of the two western towers also dates back to this time. Two other towers were built in the Middle Ages. The chapels were raised in the Gothic times.

    'Museums in Pecs,,Endre Nemes Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Baranya County Museum Authority - Endre Nemes Museum

The 18th century Baroque canonry houses the exhibition of the
painter Endre Nemes, based on the collection donated to his birthplace,
Pecsvarad. His paintings suggest a cold, unconscious future with the fears
    of an inhuman life.
The last work of the sculptor Erzsébet Schaar: "The Street"
A The 18th century prebendal building houses the collection of
Endre Nemes (1909-1985) who was born in Pécsvárad.
He was educated in Prague, then moved to Sweden in 1940.
A certain unique "rationalistic surrealism" is the main quality
of his oeuvre. He evokes the fragments of the cold and materialistic
world of European culture and civilization.

Some of his main works on show: Unveiling of the night (1938); Close to the electric chair (1979); Bird and girl (1951).

    Heroes Square

  • I know there is a Heroes Square in Budapest, but there is also a Heroes Square in Pecs. This one is mostly for the miners of the city. Once Pecs was an important mining central of the nation, but now days most coal mines are closed. Heroes Square is a small plaza with the statue of a soldier, a miner and an ancient Hungarian leader on top. This place can be a little iffy if visiting alone, as it is located in an area that doesn't belong to the best neighborhoods of the city. Just exercise general caution here and try going during the day.

    Csontvary Museum

The neo-Renaissance building, which was built at the turn of the century, has a collection of the outstanding Hungarian painter Tivadar Csontvary Kosztka. The exhibition, opened in 1973, features more than 100 pictures of an only one and a half decade long lifework. Although the original profession of Csontváry was pharmacist, he soon became one of the most significant characters in modern painting.

    Vasvary House
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vasvary House or Zsolnay mausoleum is a very interesting place, even if you never set foot inside. The beauty of the building itself is an experience on it's own. Vasvary House is a museum in downtown Pecs and it's worth a visit when time permits.
