National Theatre of Pecs The official opening of the theatre was held on 5th October, 1895. For this occasion the local newspaper ‘Pécsi Napló’ issued a special edition to welcome the new theatre. The first performance of the company was ‘Bánk bán’, an opera by one of the greatest Hungarian composers Ferenc Erkel, which had a great success. In 1986, due to its dangerous condition, the theatre was closed down and the reconstruction of the whole building was completed only in 1991. The renovations and technical modernization of the building made it possible to meet the demands of today audience night after night. Up on Rokus Hill, in a picturesque setting, stands the tomb of Idriss Baba. According to the controversial sources, Idriss was either a physician or a fortune teller. But he certainly lived in Pecs in the second half of the 16th century, and probably came to the country with the Turkish occupiers or with the first Turkish settlers. After his death local people regarded him as a saint and his tomb became a place of pilgrimage. If as lovers of Allah you wish to rise turn to Layla with sincerity in your eyes. From all who scorn your love turn away and travel to Allah's lovers wherever you may. But if your love is totally sincere you'll see Allah's lovers by staying here. And if your heart's vision is pure and fair You'll see Her lights shining everywhere &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& Remember Allah all of the time, it erases faults and makes you sublime. Serve the Best of creation and imitate him, Prophet Muhammad, peace upon him. Everywhere see the Creator's Light, He makes everything turn out right. Everything in this world comes as a sign -- Follow Allah and His Prophet--you'll shine. Beware of evil, beware of you! What you believe is what you do! As-salaam 'alaikum! Sopianae, as it was called in roman times, was founded in the 2nd century. It was an important centre of early Christianty. The necropolis consisting of 16 buildings is a unique architectural ensemble of the 4th century, and the UNESCO recognized its special value by making it part of the World Heritage in 2000. Our most significant old Christian memorial is the two-tiered ancient Christian Mausoleum, where wall paintings and the remnants of three sarcophagi have been found in the sepulchre. The burial vault of jars can be approached from Dom Square. Justification for Inscription for UNESCO Criterion (iii): The burial chambers and memorial chapels of the Sopianae cemetery bear outstanding testimony to the strength and faith of the Christian communities of Late Roman Europe. Criterion (iv): The unique Early Christian sepulchral art and architecture of the northern and western Roman provinces is exceptionally well and fully illustrated by the Sopianae cemetery at Pecs.
