 | Pecs Things To Do | Tips 41 - 50 of 200 | | Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (200) There are lots of different statues, sculptures, and modern works of art all around the city. Even in Prehistoric Ages man found shelter and a place to settle down here. Protected by the Mecsek Mountains, the Roman town, Sopianae, evolved here 2000 years ago and by the end of the 3rd century it became an administrative centre of Pannonia. Perhaps the Romans, who came from Italy, did not feel at home in the area accidentally, and probably our present visitors from Italy feel the same way. Indeed: is there another city in Hungary with a stronger Italian atmosphere? If you glance over the main square and the mosque's white-hot stones on a summer day or walk in Jokai Square in an afternoon, early evening or along the promenade, amidst the terraces of the cafes and restaurants of Kiraly Street and finally have a rest by the fountains at the theatre, you can easily feel yourself in Italy. When approaching the city from the south, it looks like we were travelling among the hills of Tuscany or Lazio. Leave a Comment

Take a bus from the center up to Misina hilltop and visit the TV tower, take the lift up and see the fantastic view. I stayed in a campsite quite closeby. It`s also close to the zoo. Leave a Comment Address: Misina Hilltop

Once when I was in Pécs I went to a service in the cathedral with my best friend who is a catholic. Since I am a protestant, I am not supposed to take communion in a catholic church, but I went up anyway, to get Gods blessing. You put your right hand on your left shoulder to signal that you dont take the communion, but the Father didn't get it. And to avoid the embarassement, people were waiting behind me, and I dont speak Hungarian, I accepted it. It felt really strange, but my friend just laughed, and believe it or not, that whole following week everything went my way...! Leave a Comment

Pecs is about 2000 years old. Since it has always been an important religious center, not easy to set a date on this cathedral : it has been damaged several time destroyed and rebuilt. The crypt is indeed the oldest part, its foundations are from the 4th century but the actual crypt is from the 11th century Leave a Comment

Amongst the buildings worth noting on this street are the newly restored Art Nouveau Hotel Palatinus; the Nendtvich House (no. 8) with its ceramic ornamentation; the National Theatre, surmounted by a statue of Genius; and the Vasváry House (no. 19), with its allegorical figurines. However, there's more to see around Széchenyi tér, the city's main square at the top of Bajcsy-Zsilinszky street.

Bajcsy-Zsilinszky street, you come across the Zsolnay Fountain outside the church on the right. Polychromatic, metallic-looking glazes typify local Zsolnay ceramics; the bulls' heads on the fountain are modelled on a gold drinking vessel from the "Treasure of Attila". One block north, the road meets Király utca, traditionally the korzó where townsfolk promenade. Address: Bajcsy-Zsilinszky street

Pecs offers real 'tasty bits' for art fans. The Csontva'ry Museum preserves the astonishingly unique yet fascinating and impressive paintings of Tivadar Csontva'ry Kosztka, perhaps the most peculiar but certainly one of the most important figures in Hungarian painting. Kosztka Tivadar Csontva'ry (1853-1919) was born in the same year as Van Gogh, and his artistic career was similarly affected by madness and the pursuit of "the path of the sun". His fascination with Hebrew lore and the Holy Land was expressed in huge canvases - Baalbek, Mary's Well at Nazareth and Pilgrimage - while his hallucinatory vision of nature produced Tatra, Storm on the Great Hortoba'gy and Solitary Cedar. After his death, these works came close to being sold as tarpaulin, but at the last moment were purchased by an architect. When Picasso later saw an exhibition of Csontva'ry's work in Paris, he asked to be left alone in the room for an hour and then remarked, "I did not know there was another great painter in our century besides me", and later told Chagall, "There you are, old master, I bet even you could not paint something like this". Neorenaissance CSONTVA'RY MUSEUM (Janus Pannonius u. 1.) holds many works by Tivadar Csontva'ry Kosztka unique personality of Hungarian painting who combined romanticism, symbolism and expressionism. Address: Janus Pannonius street. 1. Pe'cs
