Spent a few evenings here last November and was thoroughly taken with the people and the atmosphere. Was staying at the B&B just across the street and needed to unwind after the drive down from Galway, especially driving the Conor Pass in fog.
The pub consists of a series of interconnected rooms. The main room has a peat fireplace and lots of seating. Off to the right is the bar itself and then in back are two smaller rooms with lots of nooks and crannies. Sat at the bar and got into a deep conversation with the sheep farmer next to me. Learned all about how hard it was to make a living at it, how some meadows were shared in common with other farmers, the price of wool, etc. Then on the other side of me sat a commercial fisherman and we conversed about how joining the EU was ruining his fishing as the big boats from Spain and Portugal moved into Irish fishing grounds.
Then the fisherman said something the farmer didn't like about the need to learn Irish. I though it was coming to blows and then the music started. A pipe, a drum, the box playing a mix of traditional and recently written music. The Hen party came out from one of the back rooms and started dancing away and sloshing their drinks. Everyone relaxed and soon most were up on their feet and dancing as if noone was watching. When the pub closed at midnight, the young and the young at heart went upstairs and the disco there turned up the music and the heat. The only reason I know that was open until three was that we were in the B&B directly opposite and could see the strobe lights and hear the music until then.
This was November and not a tourist was to be seen (except me I guess). This was just the locals doing what they do for fun. Had a great time and forgot all about Connor Pass!

An Droichead Beag in Dingle town is the best time I have ever had. Actually, the musicians and the people started here and then just kept pub hopping from place to place Murphy's, Dick Macks, etc., until we all ended up at MacCarthy's for the last call. Their is a culture of particular traditional musicians who play and hang out all over Dingle. One of the best uillean pipe player, Eoin Duignan, lives here and it's a great treat to catch him in a Pub. Check out his website: http://www.duigo.com/

This place is definately one of my favorite pubs in Europe. It had a fantastic atmosphere, the music was great, and the people were friendly. I would recommend getting their early, as the bar can get very crowded. We ended up sitting close to the stage, and everyone in the bar was singing and dancing fairly soon after the music started. If you are looking for a good Irish Pub/Music, with a local flavor, then this is a good place to start. Leave a Comment Theme: Live Music
