 | Volterra Shopping | Tips 1 - 6 of 6 | | Popular Shopping | Other Shopping Tips | All Tips (6) Volterra is the home of alabaster, a chalky white stone which is mined nearby. The town is famous as having the finest alabaster in the world, and it is still hand carved here, as it has been for many years. So, how could we leave Volterra without buying some alabaster? We couldn't, so we stopped by a large shop called Oasis to check it out. Oasis is located on one of the main shopping streets in Volterra. It is filled with amazingly carved objects, all made from alabaster, many of which seemed to be related to food. There were carved biscuits, fried eggs, cakes and some excellent looking ice creams.
The thing that really caught Alex's eye though was the raw eggs! They have the top of the shell removed and really look like the real deal. Now I've just got to make sure we don't try to boil it by mistake ; )

The alabaster is the most important rock of the town of Volterra. With this rock was made the Etruscan urn (you can see many of the in Museo Guarnacci). Rossi's family has got a very old tradiotion in the work of this rock. In them shops you can find very interesting objects! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

The alabaster, is formed from the concentration of marine salt, in particular chloride of sodium and sulfate of calcium It is a white stone sometimes marked with stripes, brown to gold, variously opaque and much more softer than marble, which makes it easy to create sculptures rich in details and luminous objects. Gi Etruschi used this stone, cut in thin slabs, to form transparent objects, but also for giving light to the rooms, in place of the glass of the windows. Volterra is full of stores that sell alabaster objects and if wished can be visited also the production places. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

The alabaster craft whose history is inseparable from that of the history of the city, represents an other point of great interest. Browsing around the numerous exhibitions and workshops of the city, visitors will be charmed by the magic atmosphere. The main street is fully crowded of shops selling all the craft; you can easili find something to bring back home as souvenir. Leave a Comment Theme: Local Craft
