Volterra's cathedral, consecrated by Callistus II in 1120, was enlarged by Andrea Pisano in 1254, and again in 1576. The high altar is adorned with sculpture by Mino da Fiesole. Among the pictures is an "Annunciation" by Luca Signorelli, and there are pictures by Benvenuto di Giovanni, Leonardo da Pistoia, and others. Leave a Comment

Near the Medieval walls there is the Archeological Areao of Vallebuona. Here you can see the ruins of the Roman Theatre (outside the walls of the Medieval town). In the century the place became a rubbish dump so it protected the area from the pillage. From the Piazza Pescheria you can see a wonderful view over the site!!!! Leave a Comment

The Roman Theatre was built in the beginning of the 2nd century BC. You can see 19 lines of the central seats of the cavea. The orchestra had got a semi-circular shape and it was decorated with different kinds of marble. In the middle of the city rises the Rocca Vecchia, built in 1343 by the Duke of Athens and enlarged by the Florentines. In 1472, it attempted a rebellion against Florence but without success, and was then deprived of many of its rights. Now the newest part is a government prison. Leave a Comment

These bridge is connecting two of the house towers of Volterra. It´s connecting the house towers of the Buonparenti and the Buonaguidi family. Members of both families have been married with each other and so it was easy to live together......Great idea, but would you love to live so close with your stepmother ??? Leave a Comment
