The Latvian flag is maroon in colour, with a narrow, horizontal white band in the middle - and the Cesis area is said to be the place where the Latvian flag was first used: according to the legend a Latvian leader was mortally wounded in a battle here in 1279 - the dying man was placed on a white sheet, the part of the sheet he was lying on stayed white, and the edges became soaked in blood. His men used the sheet as their banner in the next battle - and drove the enemy away.

There's always a flag flying on top of the Lademacher Tower in Cesis - to show that Cesis is the birthplace of the Latvian flag. During the Soviet era use of the Latvian flag was prohibited - but the Latvians started using it again already in 1988. (Latvia formally regained independence on August 21st, 1991.)
