    Cesis is not only one of the oldest towns in Latvia, but also represents the country’s true spirit. 2006 will see a major event in Cesis: the town’s 800th anniversary celebrations. Its biography includes the ancient castle of the Vends, who gave the town its German name Wenden.

    Rigas iela (Riga Street) became the town’s main thoroughfare in the late 13th century, with a rich architecture and history.     Vienibas Laukums is the town’s recently created and large square, which obtained its present layout in 1939. The Victory Monument was first built in 1924 to commemorate the soldiers who fell in the Latvian War of Liberation.

    St John’s Church was built in the late 13th century and became the largest church in the northern part of Vidzeme region. The church was the Dom of the Livonian Order and the burial place of masters of the Order, priests and knights. The church has one of Latvia’s finest concert organs.

    A new square has been created near Vienibas laukums (Union Square), at the corner of Izstades street and Raunas street is the Four Winds Garden, with a fountain – the Water Pillar.

    In the run-up to the Cesis 80th anniversary celebrations, an 800th-day clock has been unveiled on Vienibas laukums (Union Square). Every day the townspeople and visitors can count down the days to the great festivities in 2006.

    The Cesis castle is the most impressive and best-preserved set of castle ruins in Latvia, and it is certainly the most popular attraction in the old part of Cesis. The Cesis castle was one of the strongest fortresses that the Livonian Order had in the entire Baltic region. Built in the 13th century, the Cesis castle was the seat of the Livonian Order’s masters.
    TIP A tour around the castle by the guides dressed up like LO masters is something really worth to see!

    This church built in the end of 13th century was one of the main churches in Livonia. The tower is built later than the rest of the church – in 19th century.

    This is the most ornate park in the city, and a popular place for leisure activities (various concerts, opera festivals, shows and parties take a place here!). The history of the park dates back to 1812, when local officials began to etablish a park. Gardeners installed a romantic landscape park, with an artificial pond in the centre-complete with an island. In the 1930s six sculptures of children along the sides of the stairs were installed. Another set of steps was installed to the pond, reaching all the way to the water level. The images of fishermen and their nets were sculpted for that part of the park.
