Around the castle you can enjoy nice garden, but behind it - the old castle ruins. Nowadays it houses Sigulda city council. Down here I write how to reach the castle from parking where to left the car. In the transportation chapter I wrote where that parking is. Leave a Comment Address: Sigulda, 16 Pils str.Directions: From parking you must go to the main road (Gaujas str.), when you cross it, you must turn to the left. You enter the park where is located Sigulda new castle.Website: www.sigulda.lv

Not far from air tram, you can also see Gauja river valley from the top, swirling in the air. Better to take this attraction together with one friend, because if you do it on your own, cabin inclines to one side and feelings are very strange. But being already at the top you can catch nice photos. Leave a Comment Address: SiguldaDirections: You must go from the parking to the left. Also you can follow the signs.Website: www.sigulda.lv

Present castle was built in the 13th century on the place where was wasted wooden castle of old Livs'. The castle existed till the middle of 18th century when it richly suffered from fire, later it wasn't restored, only nowadays there were research and restoration works. The castle in old times interested many conquerors, which battled for it, also Polish and Swedes. There is a legend, which is closely connected with the castle, it tells about Turaida Rose, a girl who give her life for love. Inside there are many collections with interesting things from past times. Also from the main tower is very beautiful view to the region. The entering price I think was approx. 2 Lats. Sigulda has a well-known bobsled track, where also international competitions are held, including world-championships. In Winter it is possible - as long as the track is not used for a competition - to go down the track in a mock-up bobsled, which is wider than normal so that it does not fall over and padded. Still it is quite fast, it took less than 1 min 10 seconds ... When we were there they were open from 10h00 to 17h00. Price is 3 Lats (a bit less than 5 EUR). Leave a Comment Address: At the bobsled track in SiguldaDirections: From the railway station along the railway tracks to the right; the tower can be easily seen.

Monument (garve) for Turaida rose have special story too. It is legendary story about one young girl (her name was Maija) who was killed, because she loved the man not from her class. That means, man was simply more rich than her, had bigger possesion. Leave a Comment Address: Directions: Turaida.

It was built in the 15th century as Saint Bertula church, but during wars it was destroyed, later renovated. Near the church there is nice lake, where you can feed with bread swans. Down here I write how to reach the church from parking where to left the car. In the transportation chapter I wrote where that parking is. Leave a Comment Address: Sigulda centreDirections: From parking you must go to the main road (Gaujas str.), when you cross it, you'll see the church.Website: www.sigulda.lv

This cave looks really impressive - thats why it is is the largest cave in the Baltic States. Talking about numbers, cave is 18,8 metres deep, 12 metres wide and 10 metres high. Nice paintings can be found in cave, but, pity, everyone, who visits this place, wants to fix it writing his name, date, impressions. Thats why cave and sand walls around are damaged by quite new writings like "I have been here". There are legendary story about Gutmanis Cave too - Liv warrior ordered that his beautiful but cheating wife be entombed in the wall of a local cliff. The woman’s tears turned into a clear stream of water, which later carved the massive cave into the wall of rock. Leave a Comment Address: Directions: On the way to Turaida Castle

Thats so unusual for me to see caves in Latvia (there are no such naturally formed caves in Lithuania). First one I saw on way to Red Turaida castle, is Small Cave. Here is nice road leading to Red castle - one side of it is caves and sand walls, another side is Gauja river, small streams, swamps. Leave a Comment Address: Directions: On the way to Turaida.

It is so nice that there are two longest rivers of Latvia - Daugava and Gauja - near each other, mostly in Riga region. It is said, that Daugava is long, wide, but quite silent river, without big stream. Gauja, vice versa, is smaller one, but having big stream. You can see Gauja river when crossing bridge on your way to Turaida. Leave a Comment Address: Directions: On the way from Sigulda to Turaida.
