 | Valkenburg General Tips | Tips 1 - 10 of 36 | | Popular General Tips | Other General Tips Tips | All Tips (36) Nestled in the hills of Zuid Limburg is the charming town of VALKENBURG. Cosy restaurants, shops, sidewalk cafe's and historic buildings define the face of the town. The Geul River runs through Valkenburg. People from all over come to this tourist town. I believe many Dutchies have visited Valkenburg at least once in their life, including Hans. They all come to experience the party atmosphere that the town provides and to perhaps enjoy the Casino, people-watch from the many sidewalk cafe's, or in the winter participate in the Christmas festivities. In December the town centre is illuminated and a Christmas Market is held at the nearby caves. You can find out more by visiting the website http://www.valkenburg.nl Leave a Comment

Built in 1900 and designed by JHC Kroner, the VALKENBURG MUSEUM can be found right in the heart of the town , on Grotestraat 31. Inside the former Town Hall, you will find artifacts detailing the history of Valkenburg and the surrounding areas. Discover how marlstone was formed and how the people have used the stone to build their homes and town structures. Inside you will also find a collection of drawings by the well-known artist Charles Eyck. Leave a Comment

Reportedly the oldest in the Netherlands, the VVV TOURIST INFORMATION in Valkenburg is housed in a building that dates back to 1661. I walked into the office and was greeted with a friendly smile. The Lady spoke good English and was able to tell us a little bit about the town and offered some brochures. I also bought a small informative booklet about South Limburg for Euro .50 Located at Dorrenplein 5. Leave a Comment

In and near Valkenburg you will find many signs of the strong roman catholic religion that is traditional to this region. Statues of holy persons on buildings and crosses along the road sides. We encountered this cross just outside of Valkenburg, leaving it via the Steenstraat. It gave us something to think about. The insription says: Geis te links of geis te rechs, keeze mos te zellef. Miech kens te euveral taegekomme. Although this Limburgs dialect it is easy to translate for dutch people: Go left or go right, you have to choose for yourself. You can encounter Me everywhere. Just for the record: we did go to the left on one day and on an other day to the right. Leave a Comment

The Valkenburg municipality is bigger than the town of Valkenburg itself. At short distance from the town is the picturesque village of Oud-Valkenburg, with two castles, a medieval church and several typically Limburg farms. And on the other end you will find Houthem-St. Gerlach, a village with a former convent that once was quite wealthy, witness the former building that is now an expensive hotel and the church, a wonder of Baroque architecture and art. From here it's just a short distance to Berg en Terblijt, where among other things you can find cave-houses as well as a cave-church. Leave a Comment

High up on Heunsberg Hill lies the RUINS OF AN ANCIENT CASTLE or "Kasteelruine". This medieval marlstone Castle was built in the early 1100's and destroyed in 1672 by Willem III. It is the only hilltop fortress in the Netherlands and from there you will have magnificent views of Valkenburg and the Geul Valley. Leave a Comment

Although they advertise with posters that there is a theme of knights in this cave, it really is not much more than a few statues of knights. But if you like Xmas markets: just visit this market and enjoy . More info at: http://www.gemeentegrot.nl More pics in the travelogue. Leave a Comment

Just visit this market and enjoy the atmosphere. The story of the Gnomes of dutch painter Rien Portvliet can be found throughout the cave and on top of that you can also see much of the cave itself. This was the theme of 2003. Every year has its own theme. See the website for this years theme. The Xmas markets is generally open from half november untill the weekend before Xmas.
