The Hema

Perhaps the best known of the Netherlands department stores, is the HEMA. This one in Valkenburg is housed in a particularly beautiful building, which dates from 1902 and constructed in marlstone.
I love the Hema stores. They have everything in there. I always load up on my hobbybooks when I go to a Hema. You can also find an assortment of men's. women's and children clothes at reasonable prices. And most Hema's contain a coffee shop, where you can get a light lunch for a good price.

The Hema is a department store established in Amsterdam, 4 november 1926. The name comes from its philosophy : Hollandsche Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam. (Dutch Uniform Prices Business Amsterdam)
It is a shop for normal people, not too expensive. Since 1926 they spreaded acros the country and you can find them almost everywhere. The special thing about this Hema is the building it is located in. This was the theater up to 1968. It is a building made in marlstone dating from 1902.

This shop is very small and there are books and stationary all over, in the racks, on stacks, on the floor.........
But whatever you need they have got it.

The clerck is looking old and shabby, but he knows his stuff, and helps you like a customer want to be treated.

We bought a book on walking in Limburg here. And because it was looking like it was going to rain he packed it in plastic to protect it from the water.

souvenirs, Valkenburg

Valkenburg is known for its many tourist souvenir shops. But should you really buy something like this?
Our guess is there are enough people who like this statues otherwise they would have sold something else, but we are not so charmed by it.
There are statues in all sorts and shapes. Animals, dolls, life like or made out of delfts blue. You choose...

Apart from the beers by the local De Leeuw brewery you can find Grottenbier ("caves beer") in several bars and shops in Valkenburg. It's a very good beer, one of the best to be released in recent years, but it's not a truly local product. Instead, it's made in Belgium and bottled there, after which the bottles are stored in one of Valkenburg's caves. At least, so they say. But if that's true, why does the label mention the Belgian place of Kanne instead?

In this shop you can buy all sort of souvenirs made out of marlstone. For groups there is an option to do a workshop and make your own marlstone piece.
