Popular Sports Travel | Other Sports Travel Tips | All Tips (10) If you're an avid biker (like my husband) Valkenburg and surroundings are very suitable for nice bike tours. The tour version of the Amstel Gold Race for instance.
It's an organized tour and you can choose the distance you want to do: from 50 upto 250 km. The tour goes through the hilly landscape of Zuid-Limburg and - according to my husband - is very nice.

All of the Netherlands is THE place for cyclist. However the Valkenburg region is the place for very serious cyclists and distance riders. We saw many wiz by. Here we did not find the casual person on bikes like in Amsterdam; here they were on speed bikes. I believe they have races around here.

Yes this is a resort area and tennis is among the possible activities. When we were walking along the trail, we saw a tennis court in the back of another hotel? Anyways there was a tennis court.

Perfect setting for horseback riding! No better way to enjoy the natural beauty of this region with trails along the River Geul. I’m pretty sure you could book your riding through the Hotel De Geulhemermolen or at least they can give you some information.

A great bike tour is Limburg Mooiste (the most beautifull of Limburg). It will take you to some great climbs in Limburgs hills.
The start is in Landgraaf, but Valkenburg (only 20 minutes by car) is a great place to sleep, and to please your non cycling partner.
The tour is once a year, the 2004 edition was at the 5th of June. Tom chose to ride the 150 km (you can go for 100 or 250 km too) and Gonnie stayed in Valkenburg, with only a 5km walk to take a picture of Tom passing in IJzeren, a small village closeby. Leave a Comment

During our weekend away we had 2 possibile activities to do... We choose to go biking in the caves. The entrance of the cave was a small building which had the last restrooms for 1,5 hours....
From there you have to descend a circulair staircase down into the cave.
Before leaving on your bike you'll get the chance to drink or eat something be sure to take some cons with you because there are only vending machines.
Before going on the 1.5 hour biking trip in the caves you will receive instructions on how to check if no one is missing from you group.
Then its putting on a hairnet and helmet before the trup start. Believe me the helmet is really necessary....
Temperature in the cave is a constant 12 degrees celcius.
During the trip you also get the chance to take some pictures and learn a little bit more about the caves.

If you are in to biking do try the Amstel Gold Race tourversion.
It is held a day before the professionals race. In 2004 that was on saturday april 17th. You can choose a distance between 50 and 250 km. Most people ride the 150km which is tough enough because of all the hills you have to climb.
You can subscribe at the website of the Amstel Gold Race. They give you a transponder and along the course there are several points you are registered. When you subscribe you can give a mobile phone number that receives messages of your progress. That way Gonnie knew when to head for the terrace to see Tom and a few friends finish. (OK, i made it to the terrace, but, it could be the beer, didn't see them....)
Good bike, extra drinks and food are availlable along the way, for participants free of charge. Leave a Comment

The Cauberg in Valkenburg is a famous climb in different classic bicycle races.
The Amstel Gold Race is climbing here several times during the day.
And Valkenburg was host to the world championships more than once.

Believe it or not, but there is an excellent fishing spot in Valkenburg. Ofcourse you can go fishing in the Geul, in search for trout. But you will probably be better of fishing in the pond of the local fishclub in the Geulpark.
You need a permit to fish here. The permit can be obtained from the VVV office or the office of fishclub Geulpark. When you are 15 years or older you also need a permit from the dutch government. This can also be bought at the VVV.

Yes old fashion walking. If you don’t hope on a bike or a horse, make sure to take a walk on the trails and enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings. A crisp September morning was perfect for such an activity. Hey that's my hubby... wait up for me!!
