The steenkolenmijn is an old coalmine now operated as a museum. It is the last coalmine in the Netherlands! Coalmining was the main industry in Limburg until natural gas was found in the north of our country and gas won the battle from coal. This mine closed in 1965. The tours are given by former coalminers. As they closed 40 years ago, the old miners are also old guides. Not everybody speaking english, so ask first. You are taken into the mine, which was a horizontal mine, this means you don't go down a shaft. The tour took about 75 minutes, and was really worth it. Opening hours: 1 april - 1 november : 10:00 -17:00 1 november - 1april : mon-fri : 14:00 (only one tour) sat-sun : 13:00 , 14:00 and 15:00 (3 tours) groups of 25 or more can visit by appointment. closed: 25th december, 1th january and during carnaval. Steenkolenmijn Daalhemergroeve Experience how in earlier days coal was taken out of the Southern Limburg mines. It´s the only coalmine left in the Netherlands. See and experience how people worked their butts off to have decent food on the table. Castle Ruins and Velvet Cave The Mysterious Medieval double Attraction, as they advertise themselves at their website! Only ruins remain of the once mighty castle of Valkenburg. Valkenburg once was a fortified town, unfortunately a lot of the fortifications are destroyed during past ages. The castle was built somewhere around 1050. The castle is connected to the Velvet Cave by a labyrinth of corridors. A nice historic touch next to all more fun attractions like the amusementparks. During the last four weeks before Christmas the Cave is decorated in christmas style and ther is a market. Opening Hours Click here for the Opening hours Entrance Fees for both attractions together -Adults € 5.90 -Seniors 65+ € 5.40 -Children 4-11 years old € 4.30 (Children 0-3 years free) Leave a Comment Address: Grendelplein 13, 6301 BS Valkenburg a.d. A nice walk through the forest connects the main attractions around the Wilhelmina-tower and the Velvet Cave / Castle Ruins with a very intreseting museum. It brings back alive the times in which The Netherlands still had coal mining activities. Here in Southern Limburg one had around Kerkrade, Heerlen and Geleen many coalmines, where the "Koempels" workled in circumstances hardly to understand now-a-days. In this museum one however can experience the hard existance and ... which is actually a very nice thing ... your tourguide will be one of those former coalminers! Leave a Comment
