 | Leiden Nightlife | Tips 1 - 10 of 29 | | Popular Nightlife | Other Nightlife Tips | All Tips (29) Located on one of the nicest streets/canals in Leiden (the Rapenburg) this is a quite popular place. You will often see groups of students, many coming from graduations or presentations as one of the University buildings is right in front. In the summer you can sit on the street right next to the canal and it is a very beautiful sight.

This was the first bar I went to when I moved to the Netherlands. It is small and very smokey, but it has a nice feel to it. You will have to burn your clothes when you get home (that is the case with most bars in the Netherlands, anyway) as they will stink of smoke (and so will you). Monday is the international night here and you will be able to meet many students and expats that live and work in Leiden. This is a bar/nightclub with no live music or dance floor. From 17.00 to 22.00 they also serve food

This is a fairly recent restaurant/nightclub located in the city hall building (hence the name). It also serves as a restaurant, but the nightclub/bar area is very pleasant. It is devided in 2 areas/sections, one with a bar where you stand up and have a drink. It is very modern with a blue light lighting up the bar area, with some music (not live) playing. The other part is composed of tables where you can sit down and relax (there is no music here, but you can still hear the one being played in the other room. The decor is also nice with brick walls and columns and large glass windows. This is one of the most pleasant bars in Leiden, in my opinion.

Quite pleasant, small place in one of Breestrat's sidestreets. I particularly like the service (bartenders) which is usually very friendly and the place itself is quite cosy. There is even a small dart board in the back of the bar. Leave a Comment

This is another traditional bar/restaurant, although not one of my favorites. During the day and evening, food is served and you can have a regular meal, in the evening it is open as bar. What I don't like is the service, I know you are not supposed to expect good service in a nightclub, but still... Once we were the only people in the bar and there were about 5-6 waitresses walking around and not one of them came to our table, when I asked if we could order, I was told that you have to order at the bar. Well, they could have told me this half an hour before. In any case, it is international night on Wednesday and is a popular spot in Leiden. In the summer, you can sit outside on the street or on a floating platform on the canal, which is nice.

Although this place is really close to my place, I tend not to go there often. Not because it is bad, just because I tend to prefer the Dutch bars/cafes instead. It is a typical English pub, the kind you find in all countries, with a TV that is always on (I personally find that annoying), it is also one of the few places where you can find many (30+) kinds of whisky. They also serve food and the one time I was going to try it, we were told that the cook was very busy and that it would take a LONG time before we got our order. We ended up leaving as we were in a hurry. At least they warned us right away.

Every year in January, Leiden comes to life with the Blues and Jazz Week. There are live concerts virtually everywhere and the atmosphere is great. There are even buses that take people around the city to the different venues with bands actually playing in the bus. It is great fun and a welcome change in a usually cold a wet time of year. Unfortunately this year the festival was cancelled as the "chairman" of the organization (Mr. Dick Wansink), was seriously ill. He is the owner of Jazzcafe the Duke. I hope they bring it back this January. UPDATE: It has been confirmed for 2005! It will take place all over Leiden 21-31 January Source: (http://www.hollandrijnland.nl/hollandrijnland.php?mod=evenementen&act=view&pid=668) For more information on the 2005 event, take a look at this site (in Dutch only, but easy to navigate): http://www.leidenswingt.nl Leave a Comment

I have attended many private parties at this place as it is possible to rent it. It has a dancefloor and a section with some tables to sit down and relax. Its location is priviledged and, in the summer, you can take advantage of the fact you can sit right next to the "Witte Single", one of the nicest canals in Leiden. The crowd seems to be mainly Dutch and slightly younger than at other places. It is also a restaurant.

In my opinion this is the most enjoyable spot in Leiden. Jazzcafe the Duke offers live music every day of the year (except 1st January, I think) and although it is crowded and smokey, it definetly has a unique atmosphere with old musical instruments hanging from the ceiling and the walls covered in old pictures and posters. It is also a place where the staff is quite friendly and there are no intimidating bouncers at the door. The crowd is also usually quite good, with a lot of foreigners (well, this is the case everywhere in Leiden) and generally speaking somewhat older people (over 30). But the best part is obviously the music, you will be surprised to see how good some of the bands are and if you are lucky enough to catch the Soulcatchers & Mr Green (they play quite often and are very popular) you will be in for a fun evening. It's not to be missed.

This is a nice place just a few meters from the train station. It has a quite classic look and feel to it, and there is a lot of space, which I like. On top of this, there is table service. It is good if you want to talk as music seems not to be as loud as in other places. I don't remember ever having listened to live music here. It's a good spot to spend an evening, or just while you are waiting for the train. It also serves lunch and dinner. Leave a Comment
