Nightlife in Leiden

This is a very pleasant bar right next to the Burcht "monument" in the center of Leiden.

I think it is a very lively place with high ceilings and nice athmosphere. There are often concerts/show. I remember attending live a flamenco dance show.
Check the agenda on the website. Entrance is free.

It is also possible to sit outside, right underneath the Burcht and you can have an interesting evening here.

The crowd also seems quite good.

This is one of the few places that I know of in Leiden that serves cocktails.

It has a very lively crowd and loud music, the volume is gradually increased as people start arriving until it gets to a point you can forget about having a conversation. Still it is nice if you just want to have a cocktail or some "tapas" (snacks).

Every year in January, Leiden comes to life with the Blues and Jazz Week. There are live concerts virtually everywhere and the atmosphere is great. There are even buses that take people around the city to the different venues with bands actually playing in the bus.

It is great fun and a welcome change in a usually cold a wet time of year.

Unfortunately this year the festival was cancelled as the "chairman" of the organization (Mr. Dick Wansink), was seriously ill. He is the owner of Jazzcafe the Duke.

I hope they bring it back this January.

UPDATE: It has been confirmed for 2005! It will take place all over Leiden 21-31 January

"The Duke"

In my opinion this is the most enjoyable spot in Leiden.

Jazzcafe the Duke offers live music every day of the year (except 1st January, I think) and although it is crowded and smokey, it definetly has a unique atmosphere with old musical instruments hanging from the ceiling and the walls covered in old pictures and posters.
It is also a place where the staff is quite friendly and there are no intimidating bouncers at the door. The crowd is also usually quite good, with a lot of foreigners (well, this is the case everywhere in Leiden) and generally speaking somewhat older people (over 30).

But the best part is obviously the music, you will be surprised to see how good some of the bands are and if you are lucky enough to catch the Soulcatchers & Mr Green (they play quite often and are very popular) you will be in for a fun evening.

It's not to be missed.

The LVC is a small gig venue in the city centre. We went to see the Dutch band, Solo - a two man acoustic/singer song writer and keyboard player. I had heard that they were good - and they were! It was a great night and they signed CDs and chatted to us afterwards!

The venue has free coat and bag check - but to buy drinks you must use tokens - two tokens per drink - get them from the kiosk on the door.

It was 12E for a ticket but this would vary according to the gig!

given i avoid teeny venues whenever possible as i hate yobs in the evening,i settle for a movie where available,leiden fortunately has 2 even if they do tend to duplicate each other in both movies and price.

at time of visit entrance fee was 7 euros 50 cents for an adult.

One of my favorites is Annies Verjaardag, a nice bar / restaurant with a great terrace on the water.
Leiden has over 100 bars and cafes to be visited!

Being an university town, there are many places in Leiden to go to. I went to In Casa with my cousin and a bunch of his friends and they told me that this was the place to go on a Thursday or Saturday night. Because it was introduction week, the place was absolutely packed. It was a great place but just so busy. There wasn't even room to move. I had a good time though and I'd recommend it to anyone. Thursday is 70s and 80s night.

I would recommend that you wear closed shoes meaning no sandals or anything. I think it's like this in many clubs in Holland because I remember someone else telling me about this too. Basically what happens is that glasses are simply dropped on the ground so you're walking on pieces of glass the whole evening. Wouldn't it just make more sense to serve the drinks in plastic cups?

Annie's Verjaardag (Annie's Birthday in English)
This is a great spot that I went to with my cousin and one of his friends a few times. We went there for drinks but you can eat there too. This place is located right by the water and you can even sit on a terrace that's right on the water. It's a great location and many people from the university crowd hang out there at night. I really enjoyed sitting there and having a drink and relaxing. This place has got a great ambiance.
