I am not sure what is inside of this building today, but in my guidebooks it still uses this name ! Opposite of that building you will see a great sculpture of a noble lady and gentleman and at the other side of the street another sculpture, see my 4th and 5th photograph ! The Archangel Michael Cathedral in the central area of the Kremlin honors the the tomb of one of the saviors of Russia, Kozma Minin. Again, tourists as visitors are welcome to enter BUT it is a "working" church also, so enter with respect and reverence for the acts of worship that may be in progress here. The first time I visited Russia in 1992, the tour group went to the Monastery south of Moscow where Peter the Great hide from his sister while he consolidated his "power base". We were told we could enter any building that was not locked, but other than that we had NO directions or instructions to guide us. I entered what appeared to be a chapel by a side door. There was a service in progress with recitations of the litany of service.. I decided I was a bit too conspicuous standing right beside the priest so I started inching slow toward the back of the church. When I felt I was a respectful distance from the other people participating in the service i walked toward the very back of the church. Unfortunately what I did not realize was that the reason people where not standing were I was headed was because that was a "off limits" zone. A young girl (12 -14) garbed my arm quite harshly and chided me in rather clear English that I was NOT welcome if I was going to be disrespectful!!! I have tried to be VERY careful where I stood or walked ever since that "event"! Leave a Comment Directions: Kremlin

This airplane of WW II is part of the exhibition inside of the Kremlin-walls. Nizhny Novgorod had been an important place for the production of weapons and untill 1990 the city was even totally off-limits for all foreigners. The city was named "Gorkii" untill then, with rechanging the name back to Nizhny Novgorod in 1990 tourism started again to this interesting location ! BOAT TRIP Take a boat trip which lasts about 1,5-2 hrs, a boat goes both along Volga and Oka rivers. Nice view on the city. You can buy beer/juice and some snaks, take them on board and enjoy the sail. Leave a Comment Directions: Tickets can be bought at the Central Boat Station, in the Old part of the city.

As you walk through the Kremlin be aware, this is also a "working" facility. The Offices of the local administration are located here inside the walls. In addition to the small Cathedral there are several other memorials, the "honor roll" for veterans and the Eternal Flame. There is also a display of old military hardware. The cross marks the site of a Cathedral that was distroyed under Stalin's administration of the Soviet state. It is going to be rebuilt. Leave a Comment Address: N. Novgorod Kremlin

At the top of Chkalov staircase is the Valery Chkalov memorial. The view from the base is a panorama of the entire river basin area. 1st photo is of the memorial itself. 2nd photo shows the Volga looking north, in the middle of the left side you can see a faint orange "spot", that is the St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral, very faintly in the distance through the fog on the river you can just make out the unique double decker bridge that leads into N. Novgorod, carring both car traffic and trains 3rd is looking down the staircase toward the riiver. 4th is looking south on the Volga and features my home stay host, Oleg and my translator - guide, Roman. 5th is a new renovated building on the square just across from the memorial. Oleg was a VERY kind and helpful host, if I had been staying longer I could well see that he and his family would have been a life long friends. Actually I can say the same about Roman too! He had an INCREDIBLE grasp of English!! If This had been twenty years ago I would have suspected that I was actually being shadowed by the KGB. Very few Russians who speak English develop the understanding of American idioms and slang that he had. They usually learn "textbook" English, and while they speak it very well, only rarely have they had an opportunity to learn all the crazy twists and turns of double-entendre "puns" American style. and our propensity for rapacious use thereof! River tours on the Volga are very common. There was a large passenger terminal in Saratov on the river bank to service large river tour vessals, It is obvious that N. Novgorod has the same to offer. There were docks along the Oka that seemed to support tour boat facilities also, but for smaller vessels. Leave a Comment

I was totally amazed by the museums! What you see in the picture is a museum of history and fine arts, located in the former building of City Government. These wonderful pieces of furniture (and paintings, and porcelline) once belonged to the Uvarovs family, whose estate was situated in Karacharovo. After the revolution the estate was devastated, and the family had to leave the country. Fortunately, some pieces of the treasures were saved, and now can be seen in the museum. Karacharovo village, which is now a part of the city of Murom. This village is known as the place of birth of the greatest Russian knight, Ilya Muromets. He was a son of a very strong man, who was famous for unbeatable fistcuffing, and Ilya inherited his strength. However, it happened so that in the age of 3 years, Ilya got paralized and could not move. He was ill till the age of 33, wondering why he was so punished by God: he was a small child, and could not have commited so many sins to get such heavy illness as punishment. But a wise man told him, that the illness was not to punish him, but to protect him from sins: his father, being a fighter, crippled many people, and so would Ilya, if he were healthy. But at the age of 33 it was not dangerous any more: Ilya had other values in mind than senseless fistcuffs. After recovery from the illness, the first thing he did was cleaning the bed of the Oka river and building a church from the logs he recovered from the bottom of the river. The next period of Ilya's life was devoted to military service: he was known as a brave knight fighting against the enemies of Russia. The end of his life Ilya spent in Kievo-Pechersky Monastery in Kiev, and was canonized after his death. Ilya Muromets is the hero of many Russian epic songs and tales, and even of German ones, where he is referred to as Ilya the Russian. Leave a Comment Directions: The frescos you see in the picture are the remainings of the brick church which is located on the hill (see Cultural tips), where Ilya once built his first wooden church.
