 | Nizhniy Novgorod Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 53 | | Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (53) Thsi is a beautiful Church, of cousre you may visit it, it but it is not a museum, it is a "working chuch"! Presbyterians LONG ago forsook most ornamentation of their church buildings and by expressing my appreciation of of what I have seen here in no way "abandon" my own faith traditions but rather recognize what it means to Russians who were persecuted, prosecuted and scorned for so many years for ANY expression of faith, I must accept that the tenets and foundations of the Russian Orthodox Church are different from mine but in so doing I also revel and rejoice in what it means that they are now free to express their faith in the traditions of their heritage. Russia is not just liberating the Christians and Jews, they have also liberated the Muslims, so indeed let all who revere the God of Abraham rejoice. Oh God of Abraham Praise, all Glory to His Name. By what ever route we arrived at reverence for the God of Abraham, when we are together in public, let us celebrate that solidarity; when we are each gethered with others of our faith tradition, lets us celebrate that faith and worship in the manner of the tradition that brought us to that reverence. As a Ordained Deacon of the Presbyterian church I am not called on to preach sermons. While I am not now actively serving as a deacon in my church currently, it is the tradition of the Presbyterians that Deacons are in fact Deacons for life, dedicated to serving those in the congregation of the whole in what ever fashion they may be able to do, in the appropriate manner of the matter at hand. As such I see that helping to educate the west about faith "revisited, revived, reborn" in Russia as a very important "Matter at Hand", in that spirit I must show what is there to be shown, not as a exhibition, but as a celebration. The interior of Archangel Michael cathedral looks very interesting but unfortunately our tourguide did just tell us a few words about that church outside and walked on to the next sight. So I had just a few seconds to take a look and take some pics without having the time to search for the tomb of Kusmo Minin. In such a church you will always find some attendants - mostly they are old ladies - selling candles, cleaning the church or praying. It depends totally on them wether you will be able to take photographs or not. When you are lucky you have a good camera with a strong lense and will be able to take pics without flashing. Romanoff church was the first sight that we were shown during our guided tour through the city of Nizhniy Novgorod. This church looks great already from outside and it was quite obviously also restored quite recently. The church is still used by the russian Orthodox church so you will hardly ever find a time, when you can enter it like a museum. A service was going on while we were there, but the local people seemed to be used to see lots of tourists there, so it was also no problem to take some photographs ! Leave a Comment Directions: Romanoff church is close to the cruiseship-port of Nizniy Novgorod, just about 200 meters to walk !

Inside the Kremlin and next to its main entrance you will see a great permanent exhibition of tanks, cars, an airplane and even a tower of a submarine, that were used in WW I and WW II by the russian army. Not so long ago the whole city was "Off limits" for foreigners because of its production of weapons and nowadays you can even see a lot of them displayed for the tourists. That exhibition is free of charge and part of the decorations inside the Kremlin-area. Leave a Comment Directions: Get in at the main entrance from the city and you will get directely to this exhibition !

The Kreml is one of Nizhniy Novgorod's best tourist-attractions, because from outside it still looks the same as hundreds of years ago, with a strong wall and severeal towers it was built high above the hill with a great view of the rivers. The Kreml is still used as a seat of the local government, you will find parks there, restaurants, a permanent exhibition of war relicts and a lot more. Leave a Comment Directions: The Kreml of Nizhniy Novgorod is on top of the hill, you will see it best from the rivers !

The great Chkalov staircase / Chkalovskaya stairs is the first sight that you will see of Nizhniy Novgorod, when arriving by cruiseship from the east, like I did. This staircase is really impressive, although it was never mentioned again by our local tourguide, although we finally passed by the top of it in quite a short distance, when we walked through the Kremlin. It was also nice to see that ship in the lower part of the stairs as a part of the architecture Leave a Comment Directions: Chkalov staircase / Chkalovskaya stairs is east of the old Kremlinwalls of Nizhniy Novgorod.

This is the main entrance of the Kremlin, and when you take a closer look at my other photographs, you will see the golden coat of arms on top of the tower and on my last photo the old and strong iron gates that were locked at night in the old times. On my 1st photo you will see a signpost for may, 9th, it is celebrated all over Russia as the day of the victory over Germany after WW II and most professions will have 3 days off in order to celebrate. Leave a Comment Directions: This gate is in the upper city.

You will find the Archangel Michael cathedral in the backpart of the Kremlin of Nizhniy Novgorod, it is still used as a church and inside you will find the tomb of Kusma Minin - it is one of the 2 persons that you will also see outside of the church on a monument. (see my 4th photograph!) Go inside the church, its normally open all day and visitors are always welcome, as long as they behave well and ladies have of course take a shawl to cover their hair. Leave a Comment Directions: Archangel Michael cathedral is inside the old Kremlin-walls of Nizhniy Novogorod !

Romanoff-church looks great from inside but you will hardly ever get a moment, while there is no churchservice going on. So we went inside with our tourguide and found out soon that nobody cared about us, when taking photographs. I never flash and normally nobody realizes, what I am doing with my small camera. When you enter this church, there is first the hall that you see in my 3rd and 5th photo, then you get through an arch into the next hall, where the large ikonostasis is. Leave a Comment Directions: The entrance to the church is through the belfry

You will find these governement-buildings inside the Kreml / Kremlin, in the back part of it, close to the river. Of course you cannot enter these buildings as a tourist but at least you will be able to take a closer look at them from outside with lovely columns in greek style and really great street-lamps like shown in my 3rd and 5th photograph ! Leave a Comment Directions: These buildings are in the side of the Kremlin that faces the river !
