Not far from the crossing of streets Krasny Prospet and Sovetskaya there is Voznesensky Temple, one of the most interesting temple in church architecture in my opinion. The temple building works were finished in 1913. In soviet times it was closed and was used as the storehouse. In 1989 the temple was renovated. Some pics are in travelogue as well. Leave a Comment

I think it is the longest street in the city. Krasny Prospekt is beginning in Kalinin Square and going along the city and finishing on the Ob' River Embankment. I recommend you to walk in it and enjoy architecture as wel as city life deuring several kilometers of the city. Leave a Comment

One quarter from Lenin Square to the Ob' Rive direction you can see the small white chapel. It was built in 1914-1915 in anniversary of 300-years of Tsar' dinasty in Russia. In USSR times it was, of course, destroyed. In 1992 the chapel was built again an open for service. Leave a Comment

By the way, the sea is warm enough for swimming 2-3 months a year (for me `warm enough' is above +18C = +64F, which is about the highest temperature of water in Monterey Bay in California, a popular Nothern California resort), and is just warm (above +22C = +72F) for a month. Well, we have very different summers, but in general summers in southern Siberia are hot compared to summers in, for example, the San Francisco Bay Area located 2000 kilometers farther south. In general, North America is a lot colder than Euroasia at the same latitude. Average midday temperatures for summer months are +24C = +75F in June, +26C = +79F in July and +23C = +73F in August, but it can be above +30C = +86F even in May and September. It almost never gets over +35C=+95F, though.Uncomfortably hot and humid days are rare.
Springs and falls are very short, 2-3 weeks, and the rest of the year, approximately from October 25 to April 10, is winter. A Siberian winter ! Leave a Comment

The railway bridge crossing Ob' River was begun to build in 1891 by Garin-Mihailovsky and the bridge was finished in 1897. The bridge was the biggest building works in the region and many peope came here. Exactly this event, the bridge building, was the reason of Novosibirsk (Novonikolaevsk in those times) foundation. The interesting fact is that the bridge used more than 100 years and was changed for new constructions only in 2002. Not far from the bridge you can see the old bridge span. Leave a Comment

The theatre is situated in Lenin Square, jut behind of Lenin statue. the theatre was beun to work in 1931 but then there were some problems with acoustics and the plan was changed in 1936. Th main detail is cupola that is 55 meters in diameter and just 8 cm wide and it is the only such form in the theatres that exists in the world. Leave a Comment

More then 100 years ago Alexander III Russian emperor pointed out in his rescript to his heir that it is necessary "to connect by inner railway net the Siberian regionswhich are richest with gifts of Nature". Thus, the building of Great Siberian Railway has begun. Primarily it was considered that Trans-Siberian Railroad would cross the Ob river near the big age-old Kolyvan village. But owing to insistence of Mr. N.G.Garin-Mikhaylovsky, the chief of prospecting party and a Russian writer, they took a final decision to build the bridge at the Krivoschokovo village. Mr. Garin wrote later: "The change of primary project is my own merit, and I see with pleasure that the railroad isn't declined from my idea". On May 20, 1893 in a thick pine wood on the bank of the Ob river there have been held a solemn church service on the occasion of laying of the bridge, the project of which had been prepared by N.A.Belelubsky, professor of the Petersburg Railway College.Very many workers were required for the bridge building. Thus, the Novonikolaevsk settlement have appeared and became later the largest town of Russian Asia.
In the spring of 1897 the bridge across the Ob river was opened for traffic. By that time the building of railway station and locomotive depot with workshops was completed. After that many builders left for other building sites, but the settlement didn't become deserted and the work went on there. That was significantly promoted by convenient, even ideal geographical situation. The peasants from Altay and the nearest villages brought here the greatest quantities of grain for further TRANSPORTATIONby railroad. The trade capital opened up actively the region of the Great Siberian Way that in the shortest time made the small settlement to grow into a big city; Novonikolaevsk was given the official status of the city on December, 1903.
