Maxim Vengerov, a genius violinist from Novosibirsk. Just a few quotes: 'Remember that name because soon he will be the toast of the violin world. Before he had played more than a few bars, he made a believer out of everyone.' (Chicago Tribune, 1991); 'At the tender age of 21, Maxim Vengerov has become one of the most important violinists in the world.' (Detroit News, November 30, 1995); 'He said: 'Siberia is not all snow and wasteland. I grew up in a very strong cultural community and had some of the best teachers in the world... I am aware I have been sent a great gift from God and it is my responsibility to develop it.' (Evening Standard, June 17, 1994). Maxim Vengerov has recently won Gramophone Magazine's prestigious award for Record of the Year, and Best Concerto Recording of 1995. He is a nominee for the 1996 Grammy award. (1995) Leave a Comment

The Central Department Store in the downtown. The store located on the street called after Georgi Dimitrov, the leader of the Bulgarian popular-front movement against the Nazi menace and the post-World War II prime minister of Bulgaria, is probably the biggest in the city (I'm not sure) and traditionally attracts customers from all the city's districts. Nikolai Roerich was a Russian painter who travelled extensively around the Himalayas, Altai, Tibet, Mongolia, etc, looking for Shangri-la or Shambhala. Finally he found it, but was not in the Himalayas, but inside himself. He donated 60 of his Himalaya paintings to Novosibirsk because he was convinced that near Novosibirsk, in the Altai Mountains, near the peak Belukha and Osera Teletskoye (lake), there is a fabled town called Belovodie, where still today live in secrecy, isolated, many Old Believers (Orthodox Christians who rejected the reforms of Patriarch Nikon in the XVII century). According to the legend you can find this town without realizing that it is Belovodie if your heart is not pure. The museum costs 80 roubles for Russians, you just say ODIN (pronounced like Adin), and get Russian price. My favourite Roerich painting is Santana. This is the greatest theatre in Russia, and the dome is beautiful, without columns to support it. If you happen to be in Novosibirsk do not miss a performance in it. Besides, it is very cheap and they do not discriminate the foreigners (In Moscow Bolshoi Theatre and in Saint Petersburg Mariinski, foreigners pay about ten times more than the locals!). The cultural atmosphere in its interior is admirable. Children adore theatre and go proudly and very nicely dressed with their parents. The quality of its actors has nothing to envy to any other theatre in Russia. There you will be able to watch Giselle of Adolphe Adams, Carmen of Bizet, Eugene Onegin, The Sleeping Beauty, or listen wondeful musical composition by Prokofiev and Rakhmaninov. Leave a Comment

unfortunately i haven't any pic, but i liked it very much. It's an interesting museum about the story of Siberia, its ancient populations, and its colonization. It's in Krasnij prospect, just south of Ploshchad Lenina, not far from S.Nicholaj chapel. Leave a Comment
