Do not forget that if you are...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Do not forget that if you are planning to visit Russia and Novosibirsk, you will need a valid passport and VISA, which is required for citizens of almost all countries. Tourist visas require a letter from a travel agent arranging a tour with the dates of entry and exit, places to be visited in Russia and Russian travel agency reference number.

Officially, you must have confirmed accommodation or transit information for every night you will be staying in the country. All visas issued for a single trip will have the specified dates of entry and exit. Russian visa is valid only for the route indicated in Visa Support. If you are traveling to other CIS states too, you'll need valid a multiple-entry Russian visa.

Look this page to get more information and to get help with the visa support document: http://www.sibir.net/visa_e.phtml

    Currency exchange in Novosibirsk
  • Tip Rating:
  • All payments in Russia are made in rubles. However, in many shops you may find the prices indicated in foreign currency or so-called conditional units (?.?.), which are usually equal to US dollars or Euro. The rate of ruble changes all the time (decreases mainly), that is why conditional units are used. In shops the exchange rate may be a bit higher than the official.

You can change your money for rubles in commercial banks, numerous exchange offices, in hotels, just try to find a board with the inscription "Currency Exchange" on it.
Almost near all exchange offices you may easily meet guys hanging about the entrance. They are gamblers who buy and sell currency illegally. Stay away from them because they will easealy kid you..

    Straight
  • Tip Rating:
  • There is a superstition that Russia is very dangerous place to visit. Criminal Russia is one of the main topics in local and international mass media. However, the citizens of Novosibirsk get the information about crime and criminals in the same way as many other people do in the rest of the world, i.e. from TV, radio and newspapers.

It's up to local Mafia people to shoot at each other. In case you are not intended to do some illegal BUSINESS, you may, somehow, feel safe and protected. Besides, try to stay away from any person who you don't trust or who you simply don't like. Don't give your address or telephone number to people you don't know.

Simply follow these tips that'll make your stay here pleasant and comfortable:
Avoid walking through dark, unknown, deserted streets in the evening.
Check your pockets and purses, while walking along the crowded streets
Do the same in big stores and market places.
When visiting somebody don't get into elevator cabin with persons you don't know.
It is also advisable to have a telephone number of your tourist agency or a close friend, whom you may always call in case of need or emergency.
Sometimes, it becomes too cold in Siberia on winter seasons. If you plan your visit to Novosibirsk during this time of the year, keep in mind that special face and hand creams or gels may help you to fight severe Russian winter. Fur hats are also advisable. The famous Russian "ushankas" (caps with ear-flaps made of fur of mink, rabbit fur, beaver lamb) may satisfy any taste. "Ushankas" are practically available in any clothing store or in specialized sections of department stores
Don't get shy, appeal to a passersby, when looking for a street you need a restaurant or a hotel. It would be better, of course, to ask your guide, a porter or a Russian friend of yours, if any, to put down the Russian name of a place you want to go to on a sheet of paper. You may easily show it to a taxi driver, for your own convenience.

    Oil industry in West Siberia
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the middle of 20th century huge oil and gas deposits were found in West Siberia. Since then the region has been literally suffering the invasion of oil extracting companies. Technologies at first were not so advanced and safe as now (even now they are not perfect!), and this resulted in deterioration of the quality of deposits and damage to the nature that is hardly to be recovered in full. The great Samotlor lake (close to Nizhnevartovsk city), the biggest and promising oil field, but also a beautiful and clean lake (as it used to be) has now been mercilessly disfigured: roads through the lake, pads, oil spills… I used to work in Safety&Enviroment department of an oil company and had to deal a lot with area pollutions. But what can we do: nowadays people are in need of oil more than of clean environment.

    Early siberian night
  • Tip Rating:

From the month of November, the night falls early. And it is going to last all the winters, until the end of the month of February. As soon as the night fell, the temperatures come down from dizzy way. The inhabitants hurry to go back at home after their work. After 20 hours, there is not anybody practically more in the streets.
Except in the center of Novosibirsk, animate all night long by the new rich...

    No military's photos !

The cadets keep the watch, permanently, around the monument to the deaths of World War II.
One can attend the relief of the guard, and to take some photos (I recall that to take photos of soldiers, or of militiamen is forbidden rigorously, except in some cases).

    Siberian pure water

Sometimes, it can arrive that the water that is going to flow in your tub will have this color. Cannot be if you are in a luxurious hotel in a big metropolis. But in the suburbs or the small vile, these are the things that arrive.

On apprends à vérifier avent de prendre une douche, et on ne boit jamais de l'eau du robinet.

One learns to verify avent to take a shower, and one never drinks the water of the faucet.
