Traces of human activity are everywhere. The most disgusting ones are the oil spills, which result from pipeline ruptures, inaccurate development, absence of attention of oilmen to safety rules when drilling, and many other similar reasons. You could see the consequences of such spills at sea on TV during the Gulf war. It does not happen on such a large scale in Siberia, but the peculiarity of our situation is that the pollutions produce a most negative effect on the native population, their traditional hunting, fishing and reindeer herding areas –that’s what they live on. What would you say if someone spills a gallon of oil in your garden? But it happens to native population all the time. However, I must mention that the oil companies allocate certain amounts for reclamation of native lands and aid to native popupation. Leave a Comment

Because of the climatic conditions and the maintenance defect of the road network the circulation is often difficult and dangerous. The behavior sometimes unforeseeable of the local drivers, a plan of circulation sometimes disconcerting, the presence of objects or unexpected vehicles on the public way requires an attention all particular. For information, the number of death recorded on the roads in 2003 knew a rise of 7,1% in relation to 2002, reaching the number of 35 602. The controls of the police of the road (CHEERFUL) are frequent (fines to pay there in case of excess of speed or continuous line clearing). The road, medical or mechanical helps are slow to come. Rate of alcohol level to the wheel : tolerance zero. The remote regions or gone against badly are zones to risks (the distances are long and the stranger who circulates by car is marked comfortably by banditry local - False control custom or police -). There is a superstition that Russia is very dangerous place to visit. Criminal Russia is one of the main topics in local and international mass media. However, the citizens of Novosibirsk get the information about crime and criminals in the same way as many other people do in the rest of the world, i.e. from TV, radio and newspapers. It's up to local Mafia people to shoot at each other. In case you are not intended to do some illegal business, you may, somehow, feel safe and protected. Besides, try to stay away from any person who you don't trust or who you simply don't like. Don't give your address or telephone number to people you don't know. Simply follow these tips that'll make your stay here pleasant and comfortable: avoid walking through dark, unknown, deserted streets in the evening; check your pockets and purses, while walking along the crowded streets do the same in big stores and market places When visiting somebody don't get into elevator cabin with persons you don't know. It is also advisable to have a telephone number of your tourist agency or a close friend, whom you may always call in case of need or emergency. Sometimes, it becomes too cold in Siberia on winter seasons. If you plan your visit to Novosibirsk during this time of the year, keep in mind that special face and hand creams or gels may help you to fight severe Russian winter. Fur hats are also advisable. The famous Russian 'ushankas' (caps with ear-flaps made of fur of mink, rabbit fur, beaver lamb) may satisfy any taste. 'Ushankas' are practically available in any clothing store or in specialized sections of department stores. Don't get shy, appeal to a passersby, when looking for a street you need a restaurant or a hotel. It would be better, of course, to ask your guide, a porter or a Russian friend of yours, if any, to put down the Russian name of a place you want to go to on a sheet of paper. You may easily show it to a taxi driver, for your own convenience. Leave a Comment

Here you see a bear warn sign which was somewhere on the road. SInce I don't speak russian I don't know what it says (I think it is a warning) but this bear looks so nice with the butterfiy and the flower so maybe it might say safe the nature . After I wrote this text I got a mail from Yurievich (thank you) who translated the text on the sign, it says: 'The guarding attitude towards nature is a holy duty of everyone from us' Leave a Comment

Every night around 8 PM or so the phone in my hotel would ring and I would be greeted by a very seductive voice offering me a very beautiful, young Russian girl for an evening of sex. When I politely declined I was told it was only 600 rubles and that surely I would like young Russian girl for sex tonight. Thing was even if I was even slightly inclined and I was not, you could hear several other voices in the background offering the same thing to others. Made me think this was a boiler room operation from somewhere there in the city, not some enterprising young women from within the hotel itself. I realized that with the phone numbers of the entire hotel published on brochures available throughout the hotel that perhaps this enterprise was being run by the mob, a scary thought indeed.
