Motoring in Spain has its HAZARDS.
  • Tip Rating:
  • IF YOU HIRE A CAR OR MOPED, please remember that in Spain, if you park where you are prohibited from doing so, they WILL have the vehicle TOWED AWAY. Beware of parking beside a sign saying "Vado Perminante", which means no parking at any time. Also do not park outside an Ambletoria (Clinic), or parts of the road reserved for tables and chairs.

Also, on fiesta days, streets are cleared of cars so that processions can take place. Even legitimate parking places on roadsides are cleared and if the driver cannot be found, the vehicles are, again, TOWED AWAY !

To get the car back you will have to go to the LOCAL police pound and it will cost YOU between €300 and €1000 before they will let you take it !

    Police random checks:
The Guardia Civil and the Local Police are currently having a blitz on all motorists. They are checking that the required items are carried (see below). The main favoured time to stop motorists seems to be late at night but that may change at ANY time.

Also when driving in Spain, beware of drinking alcohol. Remember that beer is a higher proof than in the UK, (at least 5% ABV), and spirit measures are much bigger!

Drive on the RIGHT and give way to the LEFT. (I've seen many who forget).

    Always park thoughtfully.

Keep the car out of town on fiesta days.

Make sure that you have ALL the required things with you in the car. This is even more important if you have driven down and are on none Spanish plates.

    Necessary items for cars:
    2 yellow high visiblity jackets.
    Spare bulbs and fuses.
All paperwork relating to the car.
If you wear glasses, a spare pair.
    2 red warning triangles.
A first aid kit is a good idea too

    If you hire a moped:
A crash helmet must be carried with you. - Not necessarily worn, YET.
Also don't do what you may see the Spaniards doing. That is, having the whole family, shopping and possibly a few items of furniture along with the family dog ALL on a moped!

On fiesta days enjoy the festival on FOOT.
Nerja is not so big that walking is prohibitive. If you have difficulties walking, Taxis are good value for money in Spain and arrive a lot quicker than in th UK so you won't have to wait long and only cost around €5 for locations within Nerja.

Whether you hire a car, use public transport, walk or bring your own car; ALWAYS take care and have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

    Check your purchase.
  • Tip Rating:
  • When out having a drink in various bars, you will see CD sellers come around trying to sell you one or more. Be warned; many of these are copies, some of them not very good.

However if you do make a purchase and you get on well with the bar owner, before parting with your money, ask to play the CD. Not only will this assure you of its quality, but MAINLY, that it is the same CD as the one depicted on the case.

I did see someone buy a "Rock Legends" disc and only later did they try it on the bar player to find out they had actually got "Country Legends", despite being of good quality. This would not normally be a problem as the seller came around nightly but this couple were flying back the next day and were stuck with it.

Try before you buy !! Remember, when the drink is in , the sense is out !!
If in any doubt, don't buy a CD or DVD at a bar.

The cost of a drink can vary greatly !
  • Tip Rating:
  • The price that you will pay for a drink depends upon WHERE you drink in Nerja.

Many suave looking establishments by the Balcon de Europa sell drinks at 'suave prices'. Another higher priced area is bars on Calle Pintada, up from the Balcon, especially the ones that LOOK trendy.

The average price that you should pay for a small San Miguel, for instance, is between €1.30 and €1.50. Any higher and I think you are paying too much.

You may find that many Spanish bars will charge less that the English ones, especially the further away from the seafront you get!

If you do find yourself in one of the aforementioned places, remember where you are and don't let the drink run away with you to the extent that you have an empty wallet in the morning.
Also remember that, usually, the bill comes at the end in Spain; and a round of drinks could be alarming when you see how much it is!

There are many bars in Nerja. The majority will not severely deteriorate the contents of your wallet. Look around and sellect where you want to spend your hard earned money. If you do pay over the odds, make sure you are getting something back like entertainment etc.

One drink in an expensive place is not too bad.
It's the rounds of drinks that are the killers!

    Lotteria
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lotteria sellers will come around the bars, perfectly legit., and offer you tickets for €1.5 or €2.5 or more at certain times of the year, depending. Higher price for end of week draw - bigger prize. The money goes toward dissabled facilities and so is a good cause.

Also they sell some of the more expensive tickets for the big draws like the Gordo.
So, you may buy some and then forget about them - until you get home !
    What to do ?

On the back of the ticket you will see a web site address. If you type this into your computer or use this link, once albeit all in Spanish, you will be able to access the winning numbers.

There is also a phone number, (If your Spanish is up to it), (0034) 902 11 47 11.

The solution is to check them while you are still there. Winning numbers are displayed at all the "Once" booths; or the ticket seller will check them against his/her list when they come around again (twice a week). Ask the bar owner when.

    Sophisticated Begging
Beware of at least two men who travel round the restaurants and distribute a little card saying they are deaf and dumb and with the sign language signs for letters of the alphabet on it, they then come round again and collect donations. Be aware that they are not from any charity but are collecting for themselves. And a good living they are making too as I've seen them visit the restaurant I have been in twice inside 2 hours.

Whether they are really deaf and dumb, I don't know, and it's up to yourself if you want to give to them but be aware it goes into their pocket. It is really begging .
