Not really a warning or a danger, but one thing I dislike seeing British style pubs in Spanish resorts. The seem to cater for the British tourist who are too nervous or narrow minded to experience anything new or different. To me it seems to be the kiss of death to a town with so much character, I just hope this trend does not continue here.

My suggestion would be to experience the local Spanish bars, you will get a friendly welcome and will often have the benefit of trying the local tapas, and experience something new.

Here was a Welsh bar, as a Welshman myself I can vouch that it is not really typical of Wales. Its called the Three Cliffs, after the well known Bay on the Gower peninsula in Wales.

WARNING! Don't be a mugging statistic.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Although Nerja is designated as a villiage, it suffers from an amount of oportunist crime as does anywhere.

Handbag snatching seems to be the latest crime in Nerja from pairs of youths on motor bikes who will take your handbag whilst riding past a victim without stopping.

Beware when visiting the Markets as pickpockets operate there.

I advise when carrying money do NOT use a handbag.

If you are out late at night, always be aware of persons loitering or following you. nine times out of ten the situation will be completely innocent but DO be alert. Walk in groups is always a good idea anywhere late at night.

    DANGER! Building work.
  • Tip Rating:
  • This information is correct as of 19 Sep 2005.

There is major building work just up from the new Mercadonna supermarket. the pavement is not very wide there anyway, but now we have to contend with wooden power poles in the middle of the pavement.

So you may find that is safer and easier to walk on the other pavement. (the Guardia Civil side). Take great care crossing the road it is one of the busiest roads in Nerja.

    Warning:
Neither side is really suitable for wheelchair passage. Wheelchair users would be better to use Calle Pintada if coming up from the Balcon to the top of town or bus station.

    The busy carriageway
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the busy carriageway which starts in Malaga and runs right through into Nerja, I walked along here a couple of times at night because the beach was isolated, and the traffic is mad!!

Walk along the beach - Not this busy road!!

    Beware of Fake CDs
Be careful of the sellers of music CDs that go round the bars and restaurants flogging cheap CDs. Sometimes the box does not contain what it's supposed to.

The only real way of checking is to play them, so if you can, see if the bar/restaurant will let you check them out on their CD player

    The Spanish Mafia!
It seems around the area of Tutti Frutti Square a group of youths that can be indentified by a feather earring have caused me unease a few times, they are no more than any other towns idiots, just as a warning if you spot one of them try not to antagonise them, because they will have a few friends close to hanD!

Really they just tend to prefer being left alone by foreigners, unless they are women! Nothing much to be fearful, it can just prevent any trouble before it happens if you know what to look for.

    Fake Statues
OK, it's just a personal thing but I hate those people who pose as living statues. There used to be none in Nerja but the last couple of years they are starting to multiply and are fast taking over the entrance to the Balcon de Europa.

    Pickpockets/rose sellers
Whilst enjoying the sights and sounds at the Nerja tuesday market it is well to be aware of the rose sellers ;mainly female ;Whilst trying to convince the unsuspecting 'customer ' to buy a rose their accomplice is quietly sizing up the possibility of lifting the said customers wallet. It is always a good idea not to keep wallets or purses in any pocket but preferably to use what has become to be known as a 'bum bag'.

everywhere, be very careful! Wear garlic round your neck after dark, carry a cross at all times, wooden steaks come in handy as well. Just beware coz they bite and suck your blood.
