 | Barcelona Les Quatre Gats Reviews | 1 - 10 of 26 | | This moderniste cafe was founded in 1897 and is world famous for its relationship with Picasso when he lived in BCN (he designed a menu and came often to the place). Its name means "4 cats", which is a spanish expression meaning " a few unimportant persons". They serve one of the best coffees of BCN, so is a good option for breakfast, when is not as crowded as in the evenings. The food was quite good and the atmosphere was wonderful-even had a pianist serenading us for dinner. The waiters were totally charming and helpful.
The lamb shank was falling off the bone good! The fish was excellent also. Even the inexpensive free wine was good. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Carrer Montsió 3-bisDirections: right off the Place D'Angel

This restaurant has a early 1900 decor and it used to be the meeting place for artists (among them Picasso who designed the first menu). It is quite easy to reach and the ambience is quite nice, though a little too turisty. (the management tries its best to give an upmarket feel, but some tables are in a less cozy spot than others). At lunch they have a fixed menu that is really good value for money: for 15 eur you can choose a starter (indicated by the nr 1), a main course (2), an excellent dessert (the waiter will list them), a bottle of water and a bottle of wine (0.75L). Dinner should be somewhat pricier (a la carte consider minimum 15 eur for one dish) but I haven't tried.
I had nicoise salad, deep fried battered fish, strawberry mousse. Johanna had spaghetti carbonara, meat balls, creme brulee. The salad was a bit small, but all the rest was good. The desserts were excellent. The red wine was also surprisingly nice. IMPORTANT: the menu is only in spanish, so make sure you have some spanish dictionary if you don't speak the language. The 4 Gats restaurant is located in a building where in the past Picasso and his friends were frequent guests. In the past several Picasso works were hanging on the wall, now replaced by replicas. The place stills breaths the bohemian atmosphere from Picasso's time. Make reservations or be prepared to wait awhile. You can choose to sit either downstairs or upstairs with often live music. The food is simply great, but this place is a bit pricy.
We had one of the best starters ever here. I don't remember exactly what it was, but it consisted of dark bread, aioli (garlic mayonaise), ansjovis and some other things. More of a cafe than a restaurant, this place is interesting because Picasso and other bohemian-types used to come here. The imitation artwork on the walls is testimony to that to give you that arty feeling. There's some cool tiling that the maitre d man was gesturing to too, so maybe it's important too! Sit with a coffee and imagine the great man sitting here too, having some ale with his artist pals. Oh, and be sure to visit the toilets! The tilework is stunning.
I'm not even sure this place sells food! It's more about the history. Leave a Comment Theme: Pub/BreweryPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Carrer Montsió 3-bisDirections: off the Passeig de Gracia

A must in your stay in Barcelona. Els Quatre Gats in catalan, or Los Cuatro Gatos in Spanish, means The Four Cats, and is a Spanish expression meaning “few people”. It was a meeting place of artists in the beginning of the XX century frequented by the Andalusia painter Pablo Ruiz Picasso when he lived for a while in Barcelona, and even designed the menu and presented his first exhibition. In this restaurant Picasso got familiarized with the work and illustrations of Toulouse-Lautrec and Theóphile Steinlen. The decoration of the restaurant is very original, inside a modernist building of Puig y Cadafalch (who worked together with Antonio Gaudi). Els Quatre Gats was the first building that Puig constructed, in 1897. Business lunches are cheap, at about 10 euros, including Spanish wine. Dinner is more expensive. You can also go there for a cup of coffee. It is besides the pedestrian street Puerta del Angel, close to Plaza de Cataluna.

A neat historical stop for lunch where the modernist used to eat drink and talk about politics and art. You are paying for that with plates around $10 to $15, but do have different Tappas choices. I did enjoy it there. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: C. More than the food what this place is famous for is being the hangout of many famous Catalan and Spanish artists including Picasso and Rusiñol. It is said that Picasso even designed the menu cover! You can see some of these famous artists work on the walls as well You can come here just to have a drink or sample some traditional Catalan food, though as many people just want to be here for the historical connections, it isn't that cheap. There are also art exhibitions and live music nights too. It's a real cultural hot spot. Open 8 am to 2pm Menu del Dia from 13.00 to 16.00h, 11.97 € + 7VA. Includes Starter, main course, dessert and something to drink.
Crema Catalana a local dessert which is well worth trying and why not here! Leave a Comment Theme: LocalComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: Carrer Montsió 3-bisPhone: 93 302 41 40Directions: Barri Gòtic in the Ciutat Vella districtOther Contact: 4gats@4gats.es

I'd never heard of the restaurant until my friend mentioned that it was hangout of Picasso's. Good enough reason to try it out. It's definitely worth a night out, but make it that - a night out. It is a little expensive and reservations are recommended, but the food and live entertainment are very good. Leave a Comment

There are regular restaurants, and there are those that has turned into institutions. I have no clear view how and why they have gained this status, but it has something to do with history and tradition. Els Quatre Gats has achieved this status as it encapsules the rich artistic traditions in Barcelona. Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso went here and paid (i.e. before they became famous), as many other less famous artists, their dinner with paintings. Els Quatre Gats captures, in my mind the very essence of Gaudís Barcelona. And the food and service is excellent too. Eating at Els Quatre Gats is a feast, and the interior is an important part of the experience. As you are led through the bar you enter a large bright yellow room, with a roof covered with white tiles. Stairs lead up to a narrow gallery where you can get the most romantic tables for two overlooking the restaurant. Chairs made from dark wood and white tables creates a classic style. The walls are covered with pictures with many different motives, and quite a number of them are memories from when a celebrity visited the restaurant. A wonderful contribution to a great evening is the live music. A man by the piano and an old violinist played classic café style music, and everyone seemed to enjoy it. Brilliant service from a polite and professional staff. Our English speaking waiter was of great help and a white wine that was perfect to our food. We did not wait long to be served and all that was served was steaming hot.
The food was as close to perfection as possibly could come. I chose duck mi-cuit with apple and Cumberland sauce, and Terje ordered a "Escalivada" baked bell pepper and aubergines. The slices of semi cooked duck liver was delicious, and the sweet apple and the homemade cumberland sauce with plenty of orange zest provided the necessary acidity to cut the richness of the livers. We chose the same main course - salt cod with Catalan spinach and honey aioli. The combination of the ingredients used was highly unusual. The salted cod, perfectly prepared was placed on top of the spinach. On top you had a slice of apple topped with honey aioli. The saltiness of the fish was perfectly balanced by the mild sweetness from the apple and the honey aioli. The sauce on the plate was a mild tomato sauce garnished by preserved sweet fruits. This dish was most extraordinary culinary experience, I have had for years. The dry white wine was perfect to this dish. If you like fish, order this dish - you will be amazed!! Terje ordered the Crema Catalana and I chose a fresh fruit mousse. It was a perfect end of a great evening.
