Barcelona has beaches. That's one thing I really love of living here. But these are city beaches, not especially charming, and even quite dirty and very crowded during summer. If you want to escape to the beach for a while, its easy to do it, and there are quite a few nice places not so far away.

For a daytrip, and just for beaching, you can go to places like San Pol de Mar, Caldes d'Estrach (North side, you can take the train at Plaça Catalunya) or Castelldefels (South, you may use Passeig de Gràcia station). Just a short train ride from Barcelona center, about 20 minutes.

If don't want to leave Barcelona, as a general rule, as closer to the city centre, more crowded. If you find too many people in Barceloneta beach... a short metro, bus or tram ride can take you to Nova Icaria, Mar Bella or Forum beaches.

    Barceloneta / Beaches: Barcelona Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • The closest beach from the city centre is Barceloneta (metro: Barceloneta). Nice to walk from the Olympic Port and the Golden Whale to the cableway going to Montjuic. It might be very packed during summer and maybe less enjoyable but in winter it is a nice place to stroll or have a sandwich before going to Montjuic in the afternoon.

Barceloneta / Beaches: Beautiful Beaches, Even in Winter
  • Tip Rating:
  • I was in Barcelona in November and December, and we still thought the beaches were beautiful. If you are there during the winter months I recommend grabbing a scarf and gloves (the breeze can be cool) and going for a walk along the beach, then stopping at a beach-front patio for a glass of wine or hot chocolate!

My second visit to Barcelona was in August, and I spent several afternoons lying on the beach near Villa Olympica. The sea was moderately warm, the sun was bright, the sand was clean and I felt quite safe. There were lots of vendors walking up and down the beach selling bottled water, beer and soda. The crowds are amazing and yet everyone seems to mind their own business and respect one another. Bring your beach towel and some sunglasses!

Oh yeah, and note the giant goldfish statue in the picture. If you are looking for a V.O (version originale aka not dubbed) cinema, there is one called Icaria near the two big towers (metro Villa Olympica). The goldfish itself was designed by Frank Gehry and is 34 by 54 meters!

Barceloneta / Beaches: The Beach at Night
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you're in Barcelona, during beach season, it's pretty at night, and quite different too-maybe even at it's best.

My hotel was near Marbella Beach, which was wonderful at night. On Sunday night, the beachside bars were open. I heard this terrific Salsa band, watched people dancing and having a great time. Too bad I have two left feet.

The next night, the beach was so quiet and peaceful. A couple of people brought their dogs out to play. This passerby girl and I had a good laugh at one dog-do you think she realizes that I haven't forgotten her? Of course, she probably doesn't even remember me!

Barceloneta / Beaches: So Many Beaches, So Little Time
  • Tip Rating:
  • The first thing I did in Barcelona was go to the beach. It was the last summer weekend, and it seemed like everyone was there. It's actually divided into several beaches (fair warning: Marbella is "clothing optional").

All the beaches have great views of the Sea, some wonderful places to have a bite to eat or a drink, several bars (both indoors and outdoors). Maybe even join in a game of volleyball. It's quite a social center.

When the weather becomes warmer, go down to the beach, watch all of the beautiful people (and you'll see quite a few-I'm sure they're watching you too!), and have a blast.

    Barceloneta / Beaches: Las Playas
  • Tip Rating:
  • Barceloneta is not the most beautiful beach you will ever see, but you will be able to swim, partake in great people watching and enjoy your time. Be warned though that this beach is very crowded, so you might prefer to go further down on the bus towards Icaria.
The weather is beach ready from mid May until the beginning of September.

  • .
Very wide and long and fringed by wooden paths along which lies a series of pizzas and the busy Catalan restaurant Agua. Somewhere along its length, the beach becomes ( Metro: Barceloneta ), a traditional and popular stretch with locals and consequently crowded, noisy and very jolly.

The Barceloneta and Port Vell are really worth a visit. Seeing the sea from a restaurant, visiting the Catalunya museum or even sitting down to watch the people go by can be really comforting. Or maybe watch the sun go down from this spot can be great. Just relax and enjoy the view.

Barcelona is on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, and there is a beach there. We went at night after coming back from Montserrat. The water was too cold for swimming, but it was nice to just sit around in the sand and chill out. Since it was in the evening, the weather was cool, so most people were wearing summer clothes rather than swimsuits. We saw some people building a huge sand sculpture, and a lot of people just walking around, including a guy who blew me a kiss! ;)

What I found interesting is that since the beach is in the city, we could see city buildings in the background even though we were on the sand.

Pets are allowed on the beach, so you might see a few people walking their dogs.
