The congregation themselves built this white shingled igloo shaped church. The interior of St. Jude's is warm and inviting bedecked with seal skin and colourful duffel wall hangings depicting community life. The pulpit is simply a qamutiik, the traditional Inuit sled, standing on end. The font which was dedicated by Queen Elizabeth herself, is carved from local stone. Services are conducted in English and Inuktitut; if your able to attend, stop by the parish hall next door and ask for a tour. Leave a Comment

One of the favorite things I like about visiting any new place is trying the local food and Caribou is a very popular wild meat that is used in Iqaluit.
There are a variety of different ways for it to be served. For example Caribou Jerky, sausages, roast and so on.

You will notice a lot of unusual buildings in Iqaluit. Some local opinions will tell you its just warped engineering minds of the 70s that created these buildings and there is no specific reason they look the way they do.
There was actually a proposal back at that time to build Iqaluit under a dome to keep the snow out at one point!!

Polar bears are common in Nunavut and it is not unusual for one to come into Iqaluit or for local people to hunt them. Just recently prior to my visit three had to be killed at the local land fill site after three repeat visits and concerns over local safety.

The caribou and narwhale represent the life giving land and seas of Nunavut. Also pictured is the North Star, symbolizing the constant guidance of the elders. The seal oil lamp or qulliq stands for community and family. The crowned igloo brings together Inuit tradition with the symbol of Nunavut's place in modern Canada. The territorial motto written in Inuktitut syllabics, means "Nunavut; Our Strength". Leave a Comment

There is a local person in Iqaluit that likes to dress up as cartoon characters and is often in a mask, possibly a cape and has music playing lots of the time.
As far as I know he is harmless and when you come across him while walking throughout Iqaluit it offers a little bit of humor to your day.
Iqaluit remember is not that big and if you explore the city on foot you will likely say hello. Leave a Comment

Directly in front of the legislature you will see a nice rock carving however you will also see on the back of this rock is a number of other Inuit faces carved into the rock.
