 | Iqaluit Off the Beaten Path | Tips 1 - 4 of 4 | | Popular Off the Beaten Path | Other Off the Beaten Path Tips | All Tips (4) Apex is a small community just a few kilometers away from Iqaluit. You can walk there via the road, get a taxi or I recommend walking the trail that follows the shoreline. From there you will see the best views. On the day of my trek I encountered some ravens, sea gulls, a dog team, some pet husky dogs and a cross country skier. After the fact I was told it is not uncommon to also come across wild dogs, polar bears and wolves so defend yourselve the best you can. Snowballs? Sticks? Gun? Play Dead? Give up your food? But the walk is well worth it! Comfortable this is a half day hike, this trail will take you from Iqaluit to its satellite Apex. It begins at the graveyard in Iqaluit and is marked by Inuksuit. Retrun along the road by taxi and you will have taken the Iqaluit - Apex Loop. Leave a Comment

The Tarr Inlet trail is a four or five hour hike looping past the old dump at Apex. It's not a strenuous trip but the terrain is rocky and uneven. The trail is marked by a series of Inuksuit and follws an ancient raised beach around Tarr Inlet a tidal estuary of Koojeese Inlet. Or follow the rolling landscape to the west the halfway point is Rotary Park. If you encounter wildlife use your best judgement. Use Snowballs? Sticks? Gun? Play Dead? Give up your food? Just go an enjoy the artic views!! Leave a Comment

In the nearby community of Apex you will find some old Hudson Bay Company buildings. Relocating from Ward Inlet in 1943, the Hudson Bay Company set up a post in Niaqunngut, now called Apex, a few kilomtres from present day Iqaluit. Some of the original buildings are still in good shape, standing low on the rocky coast right next to the shore. Picnic tables afford a chance to enjoy the sunshine as you soak up the atmosphere and picturesque views. Leave a Comment
