RECOMMENDED CLOTHING: Located on the Arctic Ocean, Barrow is cool to cold all year. Summer can bring fog, wind and rain and temperatures range from highs around 70 to lows into the 30s. Winter temperatures are normally below zero, often dropping to minus 30 and lower. Wind often exacerbates the cold temperatures. Visitors should bring raincoats and sweaters or light jackets in the summer and warm boots, mitts, and heavy parkas with hoods in the winter.
I wouldn't recommend camping or beach stuff here, unless for 10 minutes.
WEATHER: Artic is the keyword so...precipitation is light, averaging 5 inches, with annual snowfall of 20 inches. Temperatures range from -56 to 78, averaging 40 during summer. The sun does not set between May 10th and August 2nd each summer, and does not rise between Nov. 18th and January 24th each winter. The daily minimum temperature is below freezing 324 days of the year. Prevailing winds are easterly and average 12 MPH. The Chukchi Sea is typically ice free from mid-June through October. During the winter months expect the tires on you suitcase to freeze and break off (if rolling it to your vehicle or hotel) Yes it gets that cold! -40 to -70 below zero at times.
Dress warm! You are at the northernmost Eskimo city in the US of A.
Bring a GPS if going boating or camping, they're very handy especially if you get lost in a snow storm.
Barrow is currently considered a 'damp community' the only way you can get alcohol is if you order it from either fairbanks or anchorage. There are no liquor stores up here, so BYOB!

Packs are an ideal choice, as they can get wet, exposed to the slush and snow and dirt.
Goretex is a must when spending time in the unpredictable, harsh elements. This includes boots and outerwear. Layers are key for clothing, fleeces a good idea. Cotton is a no no, wear wicking underlayers. The idea is to keep warm and dry.
Sunglasses, sunscreen, moisturizing lip balm and hand and body lotions, emergency first aid kit always a good idea, particularly in preparation for hypothermia or cold weather situations.
I recommend bringing a water bottle, small thermos for a hot drink, warm gloves, and lots of kleenex! Leave a Comment
