  • Tip Rating:
  • A pleasant sojourn from Buenos Aires and a popular weekend jaunt for Porteños, Tigre is a pretty town on an island in the Paraná Delta, just 30km (19 miles) away.
The focus of activity is at the River Terminal –the Estación Fluvial – from where visitors can take a boat trip on the waterways of the Paraná Delta and even stop off for a stroll along the leafy lanes on some of the islands.

Those wanting an adrenaline rush will not be disappointed by Parque de la Costa, Vivanco 1509 (tel: (011) 4732 6300; website: www.parquedelacosta.com.ar). With its rollercoasters, amusements and fun-fair rides, it is one of the largest amusement parks in Latin America.

Only a few blocks away from the station is the daily Puerto de Frutos (fruit market). These days, fruit cultivation has declined in importance so the main products to purchase are local handicrafts. The town’s elegance has somewhat faded but the area is an idyllic one for some exploration on foot. Pedestrians can watch the rowers glide along the waters or watch the waterway Regattas during March and November.

Trains leave from Buenos Aires’s Retiro Station (Linea Mitre) regularly and the journey takes 45 minutes. For more of a scenic ride change at Olivos and take the Tren de la Costa (tel: (011) 4732 6343) for a pleasant journey through the parks and wealthy suburbs near the riverside. Travel Line Argentina and other tour companies offer full-day excursions to Tigre and the Paraná Delta for US$35 (see Bus Tours in Tours of the City).

Tigre: Close to Buenos Aires, but a world away!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tigre is close enough that you can go there in the morning and come back in the evening quite easily. By car it's only 30 minutes by car, 50 minutes and about an hour and a half by bus. You can pick up the train from the Retiro station and they run about every 15 minutes for $1.90pesos and the collective (bus) to take is the #60 and costs $1.35pesos each way.

Tigre is a small town that is actually an island. 3 rivers, The Tigre, The Lujan and the Reconquista, surround it. Long neglected, over the past 2 decades, Tigre has experienced a kind of renaissance. There are so many cool things to do on the Tigre that I don't know where to start. But good ways to see the river is just by hiring a small boat (with driver) and have him/her take you on a tour where you'll be able to explore the rivers and parts of the Delta. There are a few good places to eat and if you want to stay overnight there are some decent Bed and Breakfast places available.

For more information, visit a travel agent in Tigre, or just get on a train and when you disembark at the Tigre station there will be an information center there with maps and info on trips to the islands. Estacion Fluvial de Tigre, Mitre 305 4512-4497

Tigre: ... walk through the delta
  • Tip Rating:
  • We took the (regular) train from Buenos Aires (Vicente Lopez) to Tigre. Such a train ride doesn’t show the most beautiful parts of the country, except the gardens of the presidential villa just after leaving the station.
After 30 minutes we entered a complete different world: no longer the crowds, crazy traffic and pollution of Bs As, but the quiet, green and clean town of Tigre.

Off course every tourist comes to Tigre to see the delta of the Rio Parana. We got information from the very helpful and friendly staff of the Tourist Centre (200 metres from the railway station behind McDonald’s) and decided to take one of the public boats of ‘Interislena’. (Afterwards we were very happy we didn’t board on one of these big catamarans, because a boat trip of 1 or even 1½ hour through more or less the same landscape would have been pretty boring.)

Our boat, only with local people on board, sailed for 30 minutes over the Rio Tigre, Lujan and Sarmiento. During this time we passed hundreds of houses on stilts (all having a landing stage along one of the rivers), shops, and a petrol station. People were constantly (dis)embarking at one of the many jetty’s.

We disembarked at ‘Tres Bocas’ with two café’s/restaurants on the border of the River Sarmiento. A small footpath leads into the inland. After 100 metres we reached the Santa Rosa stream, turned off to the left and followed this stream till a bar/cafeteria Africano, where we had our lunch. We didn’t speak Spanish and the owners not English, but they succeeded to make a good tasting sandwich.

The track goes further over the island (see map: http://www.la-riviera.com.ar), but we returned on the other side of the stream to Tres Bocas and saw some very colourful birds.
A great and alternative way to explore the delta !!

Directions: Tigre is located 30 km's north west of Buenos Aires.
Accessible with the 'Tigre' train from the Retiro Railway Station, lanes 1 or 2 (50 minutes) or
by regular bus 60, leaving from Constucion ( 90 minutes).

    Tigre: EXPLORING THE RIVERS
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the good activities to do besides, exploring el obelisco and the 9 de julio av. is going to this magnificient point, called TIGRE...it`s a very nice green area where you can find so many recreational parks and going through the rivers is very good experience.
Most of argentinian people take a kayac and raw through the river just for sport and getting some fun.
For the tourist There are so many travel agencies that offer a tour in catamarans. i just took a short trip around the river and it was definitely very nice. i saw so many people around preparin a asado, and relaxing.

  • If you are in buenos aires, don't miss going to Tigre. Is an excursion of 4 hours (at least) and truly that is worth going! During weekends there is a fair in the port of fruits where they seld very nice and cheap handycrafts. A trip in a catamaran by the islands of the Tigre, it's a must! But try to go in a shinny day!
To go there you may take the train at Retiro that ends in Tigre, it's an hour trip by train and the ticket (We call it boleto) costs $0.95 (argentine peso).
