great club for dancing to alternative/80s music. Beers are cheap, the company is good, and so are the dance floors. It's a house converted into a club. The weekends are more for the playboys while Mondays are great for regular, music loving locals. If you get to Matriz before 10pm go down the street to the little street bar for some pre-partying. This is a favorite activity among regulars.
Punkish/alternative. No dressing up unless you want to totally stand out. Go for casual cool sexy or regular. Leave a Comment

I like to go to the Casa da Matriz club. Is a nice house in Botafogo that plays rock most of the time. Nice people too.
The picture is from the Cobal (market) at Humaitá, my cousin's birthday, and the crowd.

The other secret spot in Rio is Casa da Matriz. (www.casadamatriz.com.br). It's a little artist 'compound'. Two levels. Downsstairs is a bar and a dance floor. Upstairs is an art house, with many many small rooms, each with leather couches and weird colored walls and interesting artworks. They book 'theme' DJs -- the night we were there it was Rock N Roll (a bit on the sappy side). But a day later it was Trance and Electronica.
A fun house on the 'edgy' side. I can see myself hanging out there a lot.

I went here on a Thursday night and they played drum & bass in the upper room and rock in teh lower room. Also went on a Monday night and it was not that good but you're options are limited on a Monday night.
I think it's $R 14 cover charge but if you may be able to get in with $R10 if you go with a local or big crowd. You will get a card with your name, give this to the barkeep each time you get a drink. Before you leave, you give this card and they tally up the total including the cover charge, you pay that right beside teh bar and you have to show this card as youleave. This is the norm for most clubs...not sure what happens if you lose this card, so don't lose it!
There is no dress code..anything goes...most wear very casual clothes including flip fops. Leave a Comment
