 | Rio de Janeiro Off the Beaten Path | Tips 1 - 10 of 278 | | Popular Off the Beaten Path | Other Off the Beaten Path Tips | All Tips (278) Livraria da Travessa, in Ipanema, is awesome. When I needed a little private time from where I was staying I'd head there. Go in, grab some over-priced American or British magazines and head up to the coffee shop. There you can have a cafe and a smoke (if you smoke) and read up to 5 mags or books at a time! If you aren't living there as an ex-patriot, just visiting, it's also a great place to get books about Brazil or books/magazines in Portuguese. Hours are: 9am-10pm Mon-Fri; 9am-2pm Sun Another bonus: You can get internet for a fairly good price. I don't remember exactly but it was only a couple of reais for a half hour. Leave a Comment

Don't just go up to the top of Sugar Loaf. At the base there is a path for walking and running. It's a beautiful path and you can also feed these cute little monkeys. (although you aren't supposed to) Even if you don't, the view and just looking at these little guys is enough. Walk over to the beach part and get yourself a coconut! Leave a Comment

On the road to Christ there is a perfect little place to climb. Go with a local or a good climber. Just make sure you have all your own gear. If you don't want to climb it's also a beautiful walk with a waterfall. Well, it's called a waterfall but it's actually re-directed river water coming from a tube. Still great to shower under, especially after the beach! Leave a Comment

It is a pity VT doesn't have kind of an "odorama" possibility :o) The scent of the herbs is so great... To those markets to take place, one or more streets are closed to traffic and the traders set up their stalls as early as daybreak. They shout their wares with lively cries that are sometimes sung with sense of humour -always based on contemporary issues. The little stalls offer an abundance of vegetables and fresh leaves It is possible to buy artichoke, asparagus, beetroot, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, cucumbers, aubergines, numerous types of lettuce and also some veggies that may be unfamiliar to you like chuchu, jiló, maxixe, aipim ( or manioc root ) and brazilian pumpkins - which are used as side dishes as well as to make a delicious dessert called "doce de abóbora." This is a bakery/snack place that is a perfect pre-beach stop, especially when busing it to Ipanema. Come in here to get a large bottle of water for 1.80 reais or a snack before hitting the beach. Make sure you go to the cashier before the counter. You have to figure out what you want first, go to the cashier and pay for it, then take your receipt to the guys at the counter. The food is at one counter and you get your water at the counter at the far end of the store. This place is located on the corner of Jaoana Anjengelica and Visconde de Piraja Leave a Comment

There are 2 main types of Capoeria: Angola and Regional. I have just started practicing Angola (a more controlled and slow moving version while Regional is faster and more aggressive). It is an amazing sport and fun to do. The movements aren't like anything I have ever done before. I highly recommend either watching a practice or Roda or joining in on a practice. The group I meet with is very relaxed and everyone is entitled to a demo (free) class. It's located at Victory Academia in Laranjeiras. The address is Rua Conde de Baependi 71. Come by and check it out or locate one near you. FYI: We have traditional Rodas every Saturday at 3pm. Everyone is welcome to watch Leave a Comment Phone: 2265-9099

Brazilian bananas - large or tiny - are sweet and taste fantastic, because they are not harvested green to travel around the world. Oranges and Limes - There are many varieties of oranges in Brazil, including "limas" (which are not limes, but a bittersweet orange - very good ones for a fresh squeezed juice ) and laranja-lima, very sweet and tasty Tangerines are very, very sweet also. Limes are called "limão galego" and lemons "limão Tahiti." Brazilian pineapples are called "abacaxi." They are white inside and much sweeter than the ones from Hawai. Other exotic fruits like fruta do conde, carambolas, jaboticabas, passionfruit, acerola and cashews (great for fresh juices) Papayas of different sizes, Mangoes come in several delicious varieties, from little green ones, known as "Carlotinhas" to enormous red ones. We use Avocados ( Abacates ) in here for desserts and milk drinks called "vitaminas" - not for salads ( unless you are going to a Mexican restaurant, of course... ) And the Figs..... in fact two of these little boxes of figs seen here ended up going home with me... I just love them. Leave a Comment

Petropolis is located just one-hour-and-a-half ride from Rio de Janeiro. If interested in history, Petrópolis was the location where the Imperial family and the most prominent members of the aristocracy had their summer residences. So, while in here, you will have the opportunity to know not only the Museu Imperial (former residence of the Emperor Peter the II and his family), but also the Crystal Palace (a stunning construction made of steel and glass), the Cathedral Sao Pedro de Alcantara (where there are the tombs of Emperor Peter the II, wife Theresa Cristina, daughter Isabel and son-in-law the Count of Eu), the House of Seven MIstakes and the Museum devoted to Santos Dumont (father of aviation in Brazil), among many other interesting things. (More information on my Petropolis page)

The smell and colour of the fruit and vegetables, the relaxed atmosphere, make the market a good place for anyone wishing to get to know the profusion and variety of the ingredients at close... even if you are going to stay at a hotel and not going to shop for food. And there are a whole variety of peppers. From the ones you're familiar with like bay leaves to ones you've never seen before. Try the extremely hot Brazilian peppers called malagueta ( seen at the top pic ) - the small round orange-like ones are murupi peppers. At the botton pic, from left to right: the big red ones are called "dedo de moça" ( young lady's finger ) pimenta-de-cheiro from the Amazon and more murupi peppers... Leave a Comment
