The Sugar Loaf is one of Rio's most famous landmarks and it is, in fact, a complex that includes two hills reached by cable cars which have been inaugurated in 1912 ( the old open-air cable car that was used in the '30s can be seen on display up there ).
This hills' complex plus the cable car have become a trademark of the city
The shortest hill (220 m) is named Morro da Urca, the first stop of the cable cars. there you will find the restaurant, and the amphitheater where there use to happen music shows.
The Sugarloaf itself is 396 m high.
It is the best place to gain dramatic perspective on how sea and mountain range confront each other to create natural beauty.

If you have the chance, don't miss it. The view is spectacular and truly breathtaking.
Watching the sunset from Sugar Loaf and seeing the night falling over Rio is something I am going to remember.
Just don't forget to check when is the sun setting :)
I should say that I went there alone. It was not as dangerous as some people were trying to convince me. It all comes down to common sense. Don't wave you flashy camera around and you are safe. Also, if you are a girl and alone as I was, better take a taxi to and from Sugar Loaf. It is not that expensive but could save you troubles. Leave a Comment

Just like the Christ statue, no visit to Rio would be complete without a visit to the Sugar Loaf. Again, look at the weather before you set out so that you're not admiring the inside of a cloud once you get up there.
The cable car ride up consists of two seperate trips in order to get you all the way to the top. The cost is 30 reais and remember to bring enough film as once you're at the top the prices of film jump pretty dramatically.
Also, for those susceptible to a slight chill, bring something in case the wind gets going and the clouds start approaching. Leave a Comment

The height and unmistakable outline of Sugarloaf makes it one of the main attractions of Rio de Janeiro.
The most popular way of reaching the top is to take the cable car ( bondinho). Going up, you will first pass by the Praia Vermelha (Red Beach). Reaching the top, you will find out the Sugarloaf offers incredible views of the oceans and beaches, the city and the mountains as far away as the Tijuca National Park.
Access to the cable car is located across the General Tiburcio square and tickets for both legs are sold at the ground station for $8 per person. The station holds a basic infrastructure comprising souvenir stores, toilets, an information office, schedule boards and photographs of the cable car history.

Take the cable car to the top of the Sugar Loaf for a view which I think beats that from Corcovado by some way. The Sugar Loaf juts out into the sea between two bays, Guanabara, with Botafogo beach beyond, and Leme, which is the northern end of Copacabana. The view extends both ways along the shoreline, with the other bays glimpsed beyond these, and of course inland to the city and the surrounding hills, including Corcovado.
I recommend you take a warm top, however nice the weather - I found the wind at the top very chilly! The cable car goes up in two steps, the first from the ground station in Urca to the 220m (721-ft.) Morro de Urca, the second up to the 396m (1,299-ft.) Sugarloaf itself. You'll probably have to spend a short time at the halfway station, and the views are pretty good from there too, although nothing to what you'll find higher up.

Along with samba, beaches, and beautiful women, the Sugarloaf remains one of the original and enduring Rio attractions. Standing on its peak, the entire cidade maravilhosa lays at your feet: the beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana, the favelas of Babylonia, the Tijuca Forest, Christ the Redeemer on his mountain, the old downtown, the bridge, the Bay of Guanabara, and the fortresses at the edge of far-off Niterói. It's a truly beautiful sight.
The cable car leaves every half-hour from 8am to 10pm, more frequently if there are enough people waiting. The ascent takes two steps, the first from the ground station in Urca to the 720-foot (220m) Morro de Urca, the second up to the 1,300-foot (396m) Sugarloaf itself. Trams are timed so it's next to impossible to make both trips without spending transition time on the Morro, so better to relax and enjoy life. The Morro offers excellent views, as well as a cafe, snack bar, restaurant, souvenir stands, and children's play area.
The best time to go there is definitely in the late afternoon or before evening, than you can see a beautiful sunset over the bay and take the best pictures!

For a bird's eye view of the city I took the Helicopter Sightseeing from the Heliponto Morro da Urca 01 located at the first stop of the Sugar Loaf at the summit of Morro da Urca. The ride for 1 person is R$300 and R$150 for three passengers. Since I was alone and was very early when I came there I decided to wait for some one interested to take a flight with me. Not long after there is a couple who came to ask the information at the ticket booth so I approached and asked if they would like to share the ride with me. It's a 7 - minute flight. They agreed so we took the first flight of the day. It turned out great because the pilot decided to extend for 9 minutes instead of just 7. First we climbed to the same level with the statue of "Cristo Rendentor" (Christ the Redeemer) then we took the city bird's eye view, visiting the lagoon, beaches, marina and landed safely. I rather let you take a ride with us via my video clip and hope you will enjoy the flight.

The Pão de Açúcar or Sugar Loaf is another landmark for this incredible city. It's actually a 396 metres high hill above the Guanabara bay, and it's next to the Morro da Urca.
To get up, just take the cableway (bondinhos) up the hill. It'll stop first at the Morro and then on top of the Sugar Loaf, where you'll have an amazing view of the bay.
Now, if you've climb the Corcovado, maybe climbing the Sugar Loaf it's too much. Either way, you've got to climb one or the other. My choice is the Corcovado. Definately. Leave a Comment

I still feel that Sugar Loaf is more interesting from a photographers view point, the distances are less and there is greater clarity of subject matter, irrespective of the power of the lens in your camera. It allowed me to bring together both sides of the bay and for all to understand how close they are.
The views from Corcovado are equally outstanding yet there is some loss of detail as one sees the vast panorama that Rio encompasses.

The Sugar Loaf cable car station is located in Praia Vermelha. Take a moment to look around!
This area used to be the Army Officer School. However, it was razed after a communist movement among the students, in the early XXth century.. If you look at old postcards (around 1920), you can see this long building stretching beside it, between the rocks.
The plaza was built up after this. it is still dominated by military buildings. Just as you go in the plaza, the building to the right is a Navy training school. This is reflected in the flag poles, resembeling a ship's mast, the bell in front of it (rung at every shift) and, in special days, all the staff is paraded along the fences as in a ship.
To the left, there is an apartment complex that houses military personnel. It is built in an Art Deco style, but, even so, it is pretty depressing. Just beside the station is the Military Institute of Engeneering, which is a college run by the Army. Its is a 1940's building and quite interesting. Unfortunately, you can't just walk in any more to look around. (If you look to the right just after the cable car leaves the station on the way up to the Morro da Urca, you'll get a peek into the cadets' changing room!)
Across the plaza from IME, you'll see another large, blocky building, which is also an Army building, for higher studies in military strategy. Ask the guard if you can go in to see the stainned glasses in the main staircase.
Finally, head towards the beach. On the sides, there are small white buildings, with a fortified wall around them. Today, one is a primary school and the other a club (check my restaurants tips to see where you can have lunch), but originally, these were part of the forts around the Baia de Guanabara, which guarded against enemy ships (specially the Franch) from entering. Look across the sea and you can see that there are two othe forts on the oposite side of the bay entrance.
