Metro system: Metro to downtown but not Ipanema
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a very general tip but take the subway. The subway in Rio is nice, inexpensive, and fairly easy to get around it. It's a must for getting downtown but don't try to take it to the beach. It does go to Copacabana but not to Ipanema. You can easily grab a bus to Ipanema. They will be extending the metro eventually. FYI: They don't run Sundays.

Metro system: Some Notes About Metro Stations
  • Tip Rating:
  • Here's some notes about the most important stations and the neighbourhoods and streets they serve:
    Line 1
Cardeal Arcoverde: it's located in the square of the same name in Copacabana. It has only one access through Barata Ribeiro Street. This street is paralel to Avenida Atlantica.
Botafogo: Located in the Botafogo neighbourhood it's access are done through the streets of Sao Celmente and Voluntarios da Patria. It's very close to Rio Sul Shopping center and it even has a tunnal to go beneath the streets as far as Canecao (a big shows house).
Flamengo: this station is located on the Flamengo neighbourhood in the Marques de Abrantes street. If you follow the perpendicular street caller Marques de Parana and then after the crossroad Barao de Icarai you get to Osvaldo Cruz street in the Aterro do Flamengo.
Largo do Machado: it's located on the square of the same name and you can find a lot of commercial establishments.
Catete: it serves this typical neighbourhood. Catete street is filled with stores, churrascarias and street vendors. It's a nice place to walk by but be discreet. Although it isn't a tough area it is not like Leblon or Ipanema.
Gloria: serves the Gloria neighbourhood. It's access are located in Russel street, Benjamim Constant and Santo Amaro. The Church of Nossa Senhora do Outeiro da Gloria is very close to this metro station.
Cinelandia: it's located on Marechal Floriano Square. It has the City Theater, the National Library and the Museum of Fine Arts. It's access is done through the square and the Pedro Lessa street, the Rio Branco Avenue and the Mahatma Gandhi square.
Carioca: it's located on Largo da Carioca. There used to be a lake in this area that was filled with dirt to make the Largo. It's access is done through the Largo with Uruguaiana, Rio Branco Avenue and Chile Avenue. A lot of cultural events take place in this station. You can see musicians and other artists performing their arts and crafts.

    Metro system: Metro

  • The only downside of the Rio Metro system as of October 2003 was that it doesn't reach into the most touristed zones. You'll have to walk to the far end of Copacabana to get to the nearest station and there is no access in Ipanema. However, for accessing the downtown area and other sights such as Maracana, the subway is the best bet. A one-way ticket was only 1.87 reais when I was there and it's much faster than taking a bus.

I found the Metro to be safe and clean, but be sure you check the maps thoroughly before you enter the station, because once you descend toward the trains you won't find a lot of signage or maps.

Also, keep in mind the subway in open from 6am to 11pm Monday through Saturday but it's CLOSED ON SUNDAYS.

Try the website below for more information, although it was "parked for future use" as of March of 2004. Alternatively, the Brazilian version is still up and running and can be found at: www.metrorio.com.br/

    Metro system: Prefer always metro
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you arrive in the airport, there's no way of reaching the civilized points of the town out of cab. The price of the cab is around R$40, about US$10.30: ask to the driver FIRST how much it will be. This can avoid a small problem (they are not roman cab drivers, but you'd rather ask first).
Use the metro system whenever you can. I would choose a hotel close to a metro station.
Bus system works fine in Rio, but the stops don't have names like some European cities.
Charming trip: take the ferry, in Rio downtown. You can choose the "sister city" of Niteroi, with its impressive Contemporaneous Art Museum, or the Paqueta Island. The trip is charming, and you can use the "jumbo" ferry if you want to move fast (Rio-Niteroi in 4 min). If not, 20min to reach Niteroi. There, to get to the museum, take the 47B bus.

  • Rio's metro system was inaugurated on 1979 with just 5 stations. Since then it has been groing and more stations and a new line were inaugurated last year. It's a very safe way to go around town.
During last year's Carnaval it worked all day and all night, and it was a success. The price of a ticket is no more than R$2,30. You have the following stops:
Line 1 (Center and South Area):
Saens Pena; Sao F. Xavier; Afonso Penna; Estacio; Praca Onze; Central; Pres. Vargas; Uruguaiana; Carioca; Cinelandia; Gloria; Catete; Lgo. Machado; Flamengo; Botafogo; C. Arco Verde; S. Campos
    Line 2 (North Area):
Pavuna; Eng Rubens Paiva; Acari F: Botafogo; Coelho Neto; Colegio; Iraja; V. de Carvalho; Thomaz Coelho; Eng da Rainha; Inhauma; Del Castilho; Maria da Graca; Triagem; Maracana; Sao Cristovao; Estacio

Although the metro in Rio just doesn't cover the whole city, it has been very helpful to reduce the traffic jams and to reach destinations like downtown (e.g. former Itamaraty Palace) or Zona Norte (e.g. Maracana Stadium) in a really short time, in a safe way, and at a cheap price (one-way ticket is 1.88 reais, and roundtrip ticket is 3.76 reais).
The routes that the metro covers are the following:
    Linha 1:
    - Siqueira Campos
    - Cardeal Arcoverde (Copacabana)
    - Botafogo
    - Flamengo
    - Largo do Machado
    - Catete
    - Gloria
    - Cinelandia
    - Carioca
    - Uruguaiana
    - Presidente Vargas
    - Central
    - Praza Onze
    - Estacio
    - Alonso Penna
    - Sao Francisco Xavier
    - Saens Pena

    LInha 2:
    - Estacio
    - Sao Cristovao
    - Maracana
    - Triagem
    - Maria da Gra?a
    - del Castilho
    - Inhauma

    - V. de Carvalho

  • Rio's metro is an excellent, safe and cheap option to get around. The stations and trains are very clean which I found to be a surprise and it makes you feel safer. There are two lines: Line 1 runs from S. Campos in Copacabana to Saens Pena which lies in the west of the city. Line 2 runs from Estacio (where it intersects with line 1) to Pavuna which lies NW of the city centre. My only gripe with the metro is that it doesn't run all the way down Copacabana to zona sul and Ipanema. Instead you have to get off at S. Campos and take a metro bus, which are grey/blus buses with the metro symbol on the side, from outside the station (plus you have to pay for). Ticket fares are R$2,25 for a single journey and R$4, 50 for a double journey. There are ticket machines as well as manned ticket booths. The metro is open from 5am to near midnight Mon-Sat and from 7am-11pm on Sun. The metro is open 24 hrs during carnaval.

Something you should know, our subway works from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm and it serves a big portion of our population and it also provides special busses to take you to places where the system have not reached yet. You can take the subway bus to go to Barra da Tijuca, it has less stops than any regular bus, the bus is air contioning and the itineraries are very scenic!

There are some bus stops on the beach in Copacabana....

    OCTOBER 2007

With this picture you can have an idea how our metro bus looks like!
In the picture you can also notice a yellow cab that we have in the city and the pleasant rhythm of the city where people walk and go ciclyng along the Coast!

Very useful to hear that we havesubway stations in COPACABANA, actually there are two named CARDEAL ARCOVERDE AND SIQUEIRA CAMPOS.

This transportation will be quite useful to you once you are in downtown or any other part of the town which is dived in Zoana Zul and Zona Norte., When you jump off the last station in Siqueira Campos, with the same ticket you can take a METRO BUS which leads you to Ipanema in General Osorio Square. This is sqaure is easier to find because it is right in the very beggining of Ipanema.

Most of our visitors stay in Ipanema and Copacabana Area so you might need the subway, and it is a safe way tog et around the town!;)
