 | Santiago Off the Beaten Path | Tips 1 - 10 of 58 | | Popular Off the Beaten Path | Other Off the Beaten Path Tips | All Tips (58) That's a perfect destination for one-day or weekend trip (or even more if you like!). Cajón del Maipo is a long, quite untouched, mountain valley. You can try there rafting, camping, trekking, horseback riding. At the very end of the valley you will even find thermal baths: Baños Morales and Baños Colina. Water of both is known for salts and minerals good for the health, especially for rheumatism affections. Trekking adepts will certainly appreciate a day trip to El Morado Natural Park, one of the lateral valleys of Cajón del Maipo, ended by a beautiful lagoon and glacier. In an another lateral valley there is also a huge dam and a artificial lake El Yeso. And it’s possible to windsurf there! Even there after aquatic exploits you will be also able to relax in a hot water – close to El Yeso reservoir are Baños El Plomo, another thermal baths. The easiest way to get to Cajón del Maipo is – obviously – to drive your own (or rented) car. The main route from Santiago is by going along Avenida La Florida, which later changes its name to Avenida Camilo Henriquez – it will take you directly to the Las Vizcachas which is the beginning of the Cajón del Maipo. Another way is by going along Avenida Vicuña Mackenna until you arrive to Puente Alto. From there you can take Eyzaguirre which will connect to the main route G-25 just before Las Vizcachas. But you can also arrive there with the public transport. There are numerous buses leaving for San José del Maipo (the “capital” of Cajón) from the bus station at Plaza Vespucio (next to Bellavista de Florida metro station). Don’t forget that If you plan to go mountaineering or trekking deep into the mountains, you have let the local police at San Gabriel know what route you are planning to take and the day you expect to be back. Also have in mind that in local villages it’s easy and advisable to buy homemade and tasteful bread, cheese, vine and stronger alcohols and also nuts, almonds or honey. Leave a Comment

What is wonderful about Santiago it's the fact that if you're tired by the city you can easly and quite fast escape from. After less then one hour driving you can find yourself in the middle of nature in gorgeous mountains and far from civilization. Just to enough to take a breath of a pure air and relax. My preffered summer destination is the direction of Farellones with natural reserve of Yerba Loca... Leave a Comment

This is the sculpture of the Mapuche Indian leader, Caupolican, who led his people against Pedro de Valdivia and his conquistadores. Thanks a lot to my VT-friend Wstat, who told me the name of him ! So you will finally see all major parts of chilean history in my main picture: The indio for the time before the European came, then on the left the fortification built by red bricks and finally the modern Chile in the back. From that tower a wide system of paths and steps will take you down to the lower city and to the Neptun-fountain. Leave a Comment

Every Sunday, next to the Bellas Artes Museum, at the Parque Forestal, loads of people gather around different artists, clowns, street theatre and gymnast. There's music, books and nice surroundings. If you don't want to see any of these, you can always sit down and watch the people. You'll have plenty of fun. Leave a Comment

On Sundays, next to the Bellas Artes Museum, there are lots of people that sell all kind of stuff, from clothes to handcraft to animals. And cheap. If you've got no money, at least take a peek. It's always interesting to see what chileans sell and buy. Leave a Comment

Cerro Santa Lucia used to be the perfect place to defend the city of Santiago and at some places you can still see the old cannons of the medieval fortification. I am not sure wether they are the original or repilcas, in any case they look interesting and worth seeing. The one on my 4th picture you can see only from the highest viewpoint, but the others you can touch or even sit on. Leave a Comment

Mimos are speechless clowns with white faces. If you ever encounter one, he'll probably make fun of you, imitating everything you do. Don't be scared. Give him a coin, and he'll be as happy as the people that are watching how he's teasing you. As the picture shows, they can even tease car drivers... Leave a Comment

Take a look at this interesting construction :it is the trainstation of Santiago de Chile and it was constructed by Eiffel. I saw it when I passed by it in my transfer-taxi from the airport, I am glad that the driver pointed at it and also drove a bit more slow, so I could take these pics out of the car. Leave a Comment

The monument for Gran Capitan Don Pedro de Valdivia is standing in the middle of the small square on top of Cerro Santa Lucia, a great park with a waterfall, some nice benches, a kiosk and a great view over the city of Santiago and its surrounding mountains. b.t.w. Gran Capitan Don Pedro de Valdivia is the same person as on the big monument of Plaza de Armas ! Leave a Comment

Iglesia de la Veracruz is the name of this lovely church on my main picture, unfortunately it is locked during the day so I could not take a look inside. You will find it in the centre of the so-called area of "Lastarria" where artists are living and selling their works of art, there are nice cafes and restaurants as well as a fleamarket at least on saturdays. I mainly enjoyed the special architecture of some of the unique buildings there. My photos #2-5 were taken in the street "Villavicencio", opposite of Iglesia de la Veracruz. ------------------------ For Lastarria search on your map for metrostation "Museo Precolombino" from there it is just about 100 meters !
