 | Santiago Cerro San Cristobal Reviews | 1 - 10 of 23 | | You cannot miss St. Christopher's Hill (Cerro San Cristobal). Almost 15-meters high Virgin Mary white statue atop of it can be seen from almost everywhere - especially during the night, when statue is perfectly illuminated. The hill is a part of Parque Metropolitano, a huge municipal park which was conceived and still is considered as a green lung of Santiago. You can climb it by foot, you can arrive on the top with your car, but the best, the most spectacular way, is to take either the cable car or funicular. The summit of the Cerro is 860 meters above sea level, and almost 300 meters above the rest of the city. That’s why it is the most recommended place to see the full view of Santiago. And during a clear day it's also possible to see the beautiful snowy Andean peaks. Up on the hill you will find a zoological garden, a restaurant, gifts shops, picnic areas and a chapel. On the neighbouring Tuphaue hill, close to the intermediary cable-car station there is a swimming pool and very interesting botanical garden (Jardín Botánico Mapulemu). The hill is also a popular perfect place to get some exercise, play sports or ride a bicycle. You can see more views from Cerro San Cristobal in this travelogue Leave a Comment Directions: There are to main ways to access Parque Metropolitano - the cable-car base station is located at the end of Pedro de Valdivia Norte street, and the funicular station is at the end of Pio Nono street in Barrio Bellavista.Website: www.parquemet.cl

On top of this hill there's a statue of the Virgin Mary overlooking the whole city. It can be seen from most points in the city. This hill, one of the Parque Metropolitano, is the tallest one and you can take lots of pictures from the top. There's a small church and some artcraft. There's also a restaurant and lots, lots of tourists. The easiest way to get up is to take the "teleferico". You can take it on the bottom and go straight up the top. They're small cable cars that go up the hill and you get some amazing views of the city. Leave a Comment Address: Parque MetropolitanoDirections: To get to the teleferico, take the subway (line 1), get off in Pedro de Valdivia station, walk towards the Mapocho river, cross the bridge and walk along Pedro de Valdivia Norte st. (5 blocks).

The monument for Virgin Mary, the Inmaculate Conception monument is one of the major attractions of Cerro San Cristobal, a giant construction that you may see from most places in the city of Santiago. There is a small chapel under the monument, but it was under construction, while I was there. Leave a Comment Directions: The Inmaculate Conception statue is in walking-distance of about 10 minutes from the upper station of the funicular.

Of course it doesn't have to be a Sunday for you to spend some time on Santiago's Cerro San Cristobal and the huge surrounding Parque Metropolitana, but make your way there on a Sunday and you'll see a great cross-section of Santiagans making the most of all this mountainside park has to offer. A huge white statue of the Virgin Mary casts a benign grace over the whole city from the summit of the cerro and there can't be many who make their way up the mountain who don't climb the steps at the statue's base, some just to take in the spectacular views, others to light a candle at the small chapel there. Lycra-clad cyclists mingle with Sunday-best-dressed families and tourists on the wide Terrazza Bellavista while, just below the statue, the stepped seats of the Santuario Immaculada Concepcion spread out in a wide amphitheatre where a mass may well be being conducted. If walking or cycling up the mountainside seems too energetic, a funicular makes a vertiginous 485 metre ascent from the base of the mountain at Plaza Caupolican in Barrio Bellavista. Those with a head for heights can take the teleferico for a dizzying 2 kilometre-long slow swoop over the park and down the other side of the cerro. From there you can walk back across the river and down Av Pedro de Valdivia into Barrio Providencia by which time a long Sunday lunch could well be just the ticket. Two stops north on the metro from Pedro de Valdivia to Tobalaba will take you to El Bosque Norte and Isadora Goyenechea which are lined with any number of upmarket restaurants where an al fresco lunch may set the budget back a bit but it will do it with some style. Leave a Comment Directions: The funicular runs from 1000-2000, Tuesday to Sunday (Monday only 1300-2000) Teleferico hours are 1430-1830, Monday to Friday and 1030-1930 weekends and holidays. Single journey and combination tickets can be bought

You can't miss the Cerro San Cristobal as it sits with the Virgin on top overlooking the city of Santiago. It is a popular place to walk, run or ride a bike in the weekends - especially weekends after rain when the smog clears. There is a swimming pool on the hill which is popular during summer. The zoo is also on the hill but I have heard that it is not particularly pleasant. There is access to drive to the top of the hill or you can take the teleferico up there or walk. Leave a Comment

Cerro San Cristobal is THE PLACE to visit on a nice day, especially when you are based in Providencia. The cable car starting point is within walking distance. On the way one gets the impression of what houses the rich and famous live in and once in the little “flying cabin” the communities, of the haves and have-nots can be observed simultaneously separated by a thin mountain ridge only. It is a thrill. Once on the top, one receives the chance to realise what this Corvocado-wanna-be structure is. From far below the ignorant might think it is another Christ or mislead by the name suppose it is Columbus himself. No, it is Madre del Dios and it is impossible to have a good look at her because of the all-important GSM antennas and other secret facilities cordoning off themselves and her in the process. What a pity! Leave a Comment

Cerro San Cristobal (part of the Parque Metropolitano) is THE place if you want to see a really nice panorama of Santiango. On top of Cerro San Cristobal you can see the 14m-high statue of the Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepcion. To see her close up and reach the top of the hill, you simply take the "teleferico", an aerial tramway, which takes you all the way up. And a few steps later you feel like you are on top of the world. I recommend to visit the Cerro San Cristobal shortly before the sun goes down. That way you can take a panorama by day and at night. Don't forget to bring your stative and a sweater, though. It gets pretty chilly up there when the sun is down. And of course and as usual, don't walk around there all alone after dusk.
