Known as the Magic Mountain (Fuente Magica), this fountain can be found on Cerro Santa Lucia. It'll be one of the first things you see when you climb the hill from the Alameda. Maybe it's not huge, maybe it's not as big as many others, but it does have something special: every coin thrown there is collected for the Make-a-wish foundation. So please, cooperate. Oh, and one other thing. Next to this fountain, you can find some artisan work in some small kiosks. Leave a Comment Address: On Cerro Santa Lucia

The Santa Lucia Hill in the city center is an important historic landmark. It was here, at the foot of this hill formerly known as the "Huelen", that the Spanish Conquistador Pedro de Valdivia founded the city of Santiago on February 12th, 1541. He planned the city according to the traditional Spanish checkerboard layout which is still evident in the downtown area today. Try going in the morning, as it can get dangerous when the sun goes down. Leave a Comment Address: AlamedaDirections: Take the subway (line 1) and get off in Santa Lucia station. The hill will be right there.

That old towngate or maybe rather the gate of the old fortification on top of Cerro Santa Lucia is the only gate that is left over, with great decorations above the antrance-gate and with an excellent view of the surrounding area. You cannot enter that gate, just walk around of it and next to it you will find the monument of the indio and the old cannons. Leave a Comment Directions: this old gate is on top of cerro Santa Lucia.

Ermita Vicuna Mackenna is a tiny church on top of Cerro Santa Lucia, unfortunately the church is locked, but it looks interesting also from outside and from its terrace you will have a great view of the modern city of Santiago below the church. Leave a Comment Directions: Follow the signposts, sooner or later they will all take you to Ermita Vicuna Mackenna on top of Cerro Santa Lucia.

Terraza Neptuno is that lovely fountain in front of the great building at the foot of Cerro Santa Lucia, named Castillo Hidalgo. That Castillo is just for decoartion, and much too small to live inside, but it looks great indeed !From there you can step up through a wide system of steps and paths to the top of Cerro Santa Lucia. Leave a Comment Directions: Castillo Hidalgo & Terrazza Neptuno are next to Av. Bernardo O'Higgins

Cerro Santa Lucia is a hill in the centre of Santiago with a castle on top of it. It kind of looks like a wacky tourist attraction but the hill is historically significant as this is where Pedro de Valdivia founded the city of Santiago. The hill has been known to be dangerous, particularly at night, however it is now fenced off and locked at night and all entrants during the day must sign in at the front gate. Leave a Comment Address: AlamedaDirections: Take metro line 1 and get off at the Santa Lucia stop.

This statue conmemorates the mapuche Caupolican. He was one of the chief mapuches that fought the spanish as he didn't want his land to be conquered by the spaniards. He fought Pedro de Valdivia (founder of the city) again and again, making his plans quite difficult. At the end, Pedro de Valdivia did win, but with a good battle. Cerro Santa Lucia, also known as the Parque Municipal, is an absolutely beautiful hill in the middle of Santiago, where you can easily spend a lovely day hiking up and around the park, stopping in the museum full of artifacts regarding Chile´s indigenous people, and just generally having a lovely time and losing yourself in nature. I loved it so much I did it twice. Its free to just wander around, take pictures, and enjoy some quiet time (at least in tourist off-season!). Probably my favorite thing to do in Chile! Leave a Comment Directions: Near Estacion Santa Lucia on the Metro, right on Bernardo O´´Higgins, Santiago´s main road.
