    Yumana River Waterfront
The Ghats on the Yumana river are quite a distance from the water during the dry season, so we climbed down the steps and walked across the sand to see what we could find. We watched a ferryman transport passengers across a narrow place in the river with his open boat and pole. We also watched as laundry workers folded sheets with great skill. We could see the mosque in town.

    Govind Deo Temple
The Govind Deo Temple was once a magnificent seven storeyed structure built in the form of a Greek cross. It is said that the Emperor Akbar donated some of the red sandstone that had been brought for the Red Fort at Agra, for the construction of this temple in 1590 by his general Man Singh, the temple combines western, Hindu and Muslim architectural elements in its structure. But after it was demolished by Emperor Aurangzeb only three of its storeys remain. However, its red sandstone edifice is still quite impressive.

The Krishna Balram Mandir or the (ISKCON) temple is a magnificent new construction built by funds from devotees from all over the world. The temple is actually a group of buildings made of white marble with intricate carvings on them, and has one of the highest standards of deity worship and cleanliness. Hare Krishna devotees from many parts of the world can be seen here throughout the year. Adjoining the temple is the samadhi of Swami Prabhupada, its Founder.

The Nazi symbol is not new and has been in use in India for a very long time. The twisted cross appears in large numbers at the Dwarkadheesh Temple, the largest temple in town. Built in 1814, the temple doesn't appear particularly old, and it remains well maintained. It's painted in strong hues of red and yellow. Across the street is a Djarmsala, a place of overnight stay for religious pilgrims, with a very old sign of invitation and rules of behavior for those staying. Inside the walls that surround and protect the temple, there are cultivated gardens with statues and a pillar not unlike the one in Delhi.

This South Indian style temple was built by the wealthy Seth family of Mathura in the year 1851, and is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha or Rangaji, a form of Lord Vishnu lying down on the Sesa Naga (celestial serpent). This temple has a traditional South Indian gateway and is surrounded by high walls. It is one of Vrindavan's largest temples.

This is the spot where Lord Krishna was born in Mathura. A marble slab marks the original spot of birth in the Katra Keshav Deo Temple at the site. The main shrine is inconspicuous, a narrow passage leads into a small room with a raised platform to the left, beautiful pictures of the child Krishna adorn the platform and the story of his birth is both written and illustrated on the walls. A narrow set of marble steps lead to a terrace through a walled corridor, creating the effect of a prison while leading out.
