    The Shore Temple
  • Tip Rating:
  • As its name suggests, the Shore Temple overlooks the Bay of Bengal (Mamallapuram was the port city of Kanchipuram, the Pallava capital). Its location, so near the sea, has resulted in considerable erosion of the temple's superstructure.
It's architectures is quite similar to the Pancha rathas (see former tips)

The temple itself hasn't suffered much from the Tsunami as there is already a breakwater protecting it. The waves have only caused damage to the pavement, which was being restorized at the time we visited.

    The Five Rathas
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the southern edge of Mahabalipuram is a group of five free-standing temples. Four of them were carved out of a single long granite boulder. These temples are actually detailed replicas of ancient wooden structures and represent the rathas (chariots) of Arjuna, Bhima, Dharmaraja, Nakula-Sahadeva -- the five Pandava princes of the epic Mahabharata -- and their common wife, Draupadi.

    The Arjuna Ratha
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Dharmaraja Ratha is dedicated to Shiva. It's a miniature version of the Dharmaraja ratha, and a true picture of dravidian style of architecture

The shrine seems to resemble a small palace or pavillion, with sculpted pilasters, miniature roof shrines, and an octagonal dome.

John Boetes and his Universal Peace Park (Cont.)
  • Tip Rating:
  • John's Motives
John Boates was expecting us to be some kind of journalists or writers (I wish) so that we can write about him and create the awareness of his work to setup a park which he will make at least 80 statues of men and women who stood for "peace, love and courage". Among the completed ones, they are Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Abraham Lincoln (broken), John F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Princess Diana and few more.

    Our Roles
Although we are not journalists as what he would expect us to be, but we're bloggers and I think this is something I will be compelled to share with everyone who read my page.

Due to the page length limitation, I will structured the next few tips on why John wanted to create a Universal Peace Part and also slightly describe and try to relate John's work to the stone sculpture industry in Mamallapuram.

    Latest Update (27th Mar 2006)
John Boetes wrote to me and thanking me for telling those who surf my Mamallapuram about his work. He is agreeable that I should include his email address for people who are interested to email him and press/media are welcome to email him for feature stories.

Btw, he is now sexy (topless) at Koh Samui (Thailand) and will be at Penang on 2nd April 2006. If anyone wanted to meet him, I may be able to become his ambassador to arrange a meet for you guys. (please sign up for KL Meet)

John Boetes is reachable at jodyleeupp@yahoo.com

    The Darmaraja Ratha
  • Tip Rating:
  • The base of the Dharmaraja ratha is supported by figures of a lion alternating with an elephant. as bearers of a heavy burden. Its base is square and it rises to 13 metres as a pyramid. It has three tiers and a small stupa on top of the spire. The columns at the entrance bear sculptures of lions which support the shafts.
On the left side of the temple there is Shiva's Nandi or sacred bull.
