~ The Thursday suuq ~
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Thursday suuq or market of Agadir is a nice day out, as it is totally dominated by Moroccans and has high quality products for sale such as leather, handbags, incense sticks, oils, spices, make up, hats, clothes etc... you name it they have it here.

Always haggle the prices though and if you go with a guide dont pay the price they offer as the guide with you will be getting a commission from the store seller. The locals say to haggle to around 50-75% of the original asking price.

    ~ The Kasbah ~
  • Tip Rating:
  • I have heard that the Kasbah of Agadir is one of the worst attractions of the country. There is only walls and a gate and nothing that would attract anyone. And yet many tourists do come here the Moroccans told me.
But there is one good thing that it is apparently worth coming for....... the fantastic views over Agadir and the beach. It takes around 20 minutes walking or only 3 minutes in a car.

    Ship building yard and Kasbah
  • Tip Rating:
  • Near the quays of the port of Agadir we saw also a ship building yard. It was interesting to see the different phases of constructing the wooden carcass.

I visited the ship builiding yard in 1992, but in 2007 when I visited the kasbah, I saw that the ship building yard is still there at the same place (see picture 4).

At the background (picture 1) you see the hill with the Kasbah of Agadir. Only the ramparts were partially rebuilt after the earth quake of 1960, but noting remains within. At the foot of the Kasbah was the medina, now covered by soil and grass. Thousands of people died here by the earth quake.

    Marrakech
  • Tip Rating:
  • The hotel offer trips to Marrakech for 1500.00 moroccan dirmas per person with over night stay in a hotel. We decided to go on the local bus which cost only 140.00 MAD each for a return tiket by coach. You have to book a ticket the day before you want to travel ,ask at the hotel or the taxi driver and go to CTM bus station in agadir.

About 3 quarters of the way there we stoped off at a service station. Here you can use the toilets but you are expected to pay 1 mad, and ladies you have to stand over a hole in the floor. I would surgest having some antibacterial hand wipes when travelling to and around marrakech.

We sampled a traditional Moroccan dish where its cooked in a pointed pot (sorry not sure what there called) there is beef in the bottom then on top potatoes, onion and some other veg and i can honestly say it was excellent, very tasty. This dish is eaten with bread and no knife and fork. (See pic 2)

    Souq al-Had
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the southeast of Agadir is a walled market, the Souq al-Had. I visited this place at my first day ever in Agadir. There are many goods for sale like food, herbs, household stuff, clothes. There are also lots of souvenirsstalls.

The atmosphere in the Souq is more traditionally Moroccan than in the Central Market area in the modern citycentre of Agadir where you can find also lots of souvenir stalls, the Uniprixsupermarket, shops and restaurants.

In the port of Agadir it's great to walk along the quays and to look at the fishingboats in the morning. At the quays you can see a lot of heaps of red-coloured fishing nets. I like it to watch all these activities in the harbour.

After our walk we went inside the halls to have a look at the catch of the day. Lots of fish including some small sharks.

Agadir has a beautiful broad sandy beach of 10 KM. The beach is very clean. Most of the time there is a nice breeze coming from the Atlantic, so walking along the beach or Rue de la plage is pretty.

At the walking promenade along the beach in the north are many restaurants with terraces and umbrellas. At some places are fenced areas of the beachcafes and hotels. At these places you can hire a deckchair and umbrella.

At some places and some times the beach can be rather crowded. South of Agadir we found almost empty beaches.

    Souq al-Had, much to see
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are a market addict like me, you may have a lot to explore at the stalls of the Souq al-Had.
So I found at this marketstall boxes with all kind of different stuff from haberdashery, plastics, beans, stones to herbs (picture 1). Of many stuff I couldn't discover what it was, so there still are some mysteries at this market.

The combination of the mysterious products and the lifely atmosphere (picture 2 and 3) at the markets keep fascinating me to visit those places.

The importance of Agadir as a fishing and commercial port is growing. So did the port facilities the last years. A large part of Morocco's sardine catch comes through Agadir nowadays. At the complex are about 20 factories to tin and to freeze in the fish products from the sea.

During our first trip to Agadir in 1992, we visited the port in the morning. The morning sea fogs gave the port a special atmosphere. In 2007 I visited the kasbah, so I could make overview pictures from there.
