  • Sabie Trout at the Loggerhead - Sabie
    Sabie Trout at the Loggerhead

On checking into our Hillwatering B&B accommodations, we asked the owners where they would recommend to eat in Sabie. They immediately gave us the directions to the Loggerhead and made a 7 PM booking for us. We had no problem finding the place, Sabie is not very big, and were soon sitting down to enjoy our meal on a not very busy mid-week night.

On our first night at Loggerhead, we both tried filleted local Sabie Trout with rice and vegetables. Although we enjoyed it, we felt it was not quite up to the Atlantic Salmon that we had been used to. The meal only came to US$18 including drinks! However, since we ended up spending an extra night in Sabie we came back for another try the next night. Sue switched to smoked salmon trout while I opted for delicious spicey Piri-Piri Chicken!

Hillwatering B&B: Breakfast in the Fresh Air
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • As per their high standards, breakfast at Hillwaterings was first class! It was served outdoors on their deck area surrounded by a profusion of flowering plants and vines. As you can see, it started out with orange juice (covered with doilies to keep the insects out) accompanied by paw-paw. This was followed by the main course of an omelette served with fried mushrooms and tomatoes - delicious. Of course toast and tea are included as well. For entertainment, their two bulldog-like pugs kept us amused by their antics as we ate! Our stay there showed us how small the world really is. On our first night, we met a Scots couple who were staying there - and they had lived in Luanshya, Zambia , the town where my wife spent almost 20 years of her life! The next morning while we were having this breakfast, I chatted to a man sittiing at the other table and it turned out that he was a forester who had studied in my home province of New Brunswick!

Petena Pancake: Get Some Interesting Pancakes Here!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This was a nice little restaurant with all sorts of pancakes and other items. I didn't know you could do so many variations on pancakes! Notice they served lettuce and tomato with my pancake entree... not something you'd get in the US =) They were very tasty, though!

Smokey pancake world: Pancakes, pizzas, potjiekos etc
  • Satisfaction:
  • More pancakes? No. Here we tried the pizza and it is great. Part of the restaurant is in the train and than there is also a beautiful outside area with plants and water features. Very quiet and relaxing. Staff is friendly and patient. On a previous occasion Rian (he was 3 then) knocked over milkshakes and virtually destroyed everything on the table. They calmly moved us to an outside table and could run around without breaking anything.

Pizzas are great and big. I see they have added potjiekos ( very traditional SA dish - similar to a stew) but we didn't try that.

    Smokey's Diner: Banana on Pizza!
  • Satisfaction:
  • Smokey's was the first place that caught our eyes as we drover into Sabie from Johannesburg. We were starving! From the outside, you first notice the rail car and the windmill. As you enter, you'll see the little boy statue/fountain peeing into a pot. Inside the decor is wooden and rustic. We sat on a porch in the back with a view of a small fish pond. The wait staff was very friendly and went out of their way to recommend local hotels when we asked.

Oh, and the food... We ordered the Greek salad and a pizza with ham and banana! It was delicious!

    Petena's: More pancakes
  • Satisfaction:
  • Graskop and Sabie seem to be the pancake mecca of the lowveld.

From previous travels I remembered Petena's and couldn't wait to get to Sabie for the pancake.s
(A pancake is a very popular south african dish. I know the French calls it crepe's. Pancakes are thicker and can be filled with any savoury or sweet filling. Traditionally it was eaten with cinnamon and sugar ) .

Nice big verandah. You don't want to sit inside except when the weather is very bad. Great view over the mountains.

    Great service. Excellent food.

My alltime favourite is the asperagus and cheese sauce filling. The best.
Kids and hubby don't eat asperagus so they always have curry or chicken. Lovely.

It was great 5 years ago. It is still great.
