Selling Skills
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tunisians are very resourceful salesmen.

My favourite were the young men that will approach you in the street, greet you and ask if you remember them, you tell them no and they then tell you that they served you breakfast in your hotel that morning! You apologise for not recognizing them and they tell you that its ok and they shake your hand.

This will have disarmed you somewhat.

Their next move is to invite you to their brother's shop for some tea.

Don't go, its just going to be to try to sell you something.

You wont see him a breakfast the next day either, he has never worked in your hotel he's just a good salesman!

    Carpets and "carpets"
    Tunisian hand-made carpet - Nabeul
    Tunisian hand-made carpet

There are carpets and "carpets", depend on weather you buy it in the carpet stores or from the street wendors. Every street weondor will try to convince you that his carpets, even those which cost 100 dinars only, are of wool origin and hand-made.
One more warning, when in Medina, never trust to those guys who "recognize" you as the guest of the hotel they are working in. Usualy they'll try to present themselves as the waiters, pretending to help you in shopping.

In case your "waiter" is importunate, ignore him or tell him you're going to call the police and he will disappeared immediately.

The hand-made wollen carpet isn't cheap, it cost from 150 euros and higher. If the seller cannot provide you the certificate issued by the state authorities, do not buy it.

    Narked in Nabeul
Nabeul will also be under "list of things to do". It's worth going just as long as you expect it to be a tourist trap!

We went on the "market day" buy hey - every day is market day - market day with marked up prices!!!

If you get a bus there direct from your hotel the chances are your driver will stop just out side of Nabeul at a pottery shop so you can watch pottery being made & painted etc...

It is worth going to have a look and there are some amazing buildings around Nabeul with cermaic tiles etc...

Go in the right frame of mood. It is hot and I don't think I have ever been anywhere where I have been more hassled or pestered! Keep your cool because nobody likes it when you get sharp in the tongue but be extremely firm and remove yourself.

Don't be frightened to haggle the prices right down here - and walk away if it's not what you want to pay. They may not like you for it but they'll most probably soon come running after you agreeing your price!

Many places away from Nabeul sell the same pottery etc... However you may not find the variety elsewhere and if, like I wase, you are looking for something specific this may be your best bet. Eg tiles with numbers on - they are sold in most medinas but I needed x2 number of the same number and most places sell x1 of each number....
