Kidlington Things To Do

Five miles from Kidlington is the historic Blenheim Palace.

The inscription on the East Gate declares that:-

Under the auspices of a munificent sovereign this house was built for John Duke of Marlborough and his Duchess Sarah by Sir F.Vanbrugh between the years 1705 and 1722. And the Royal Manor of Woodstock, together with a grant of £240,000 towards the building of Blenheim was given by Her Majesty Queen Anne and confirmned by act of parliament

Nearby is the village of Bladon where Sir Winston Churchill is buried. (Sir Winston Churchill, a decendent of the Duke of Marlborough was born at Blenheim Palace)

Alas no photograph to show you yet, as it has been many many years since I went to Blenheim Palace and its grounds, and am hoping to return there soon to take digital pictures to put on vt.

Canal boat

If you are on a canal boat, you can stock up here, and use facilities etc.,

There is also a huge expanse of water to enable you to turn the boat round if you wish to go back from where you came.

	The Oxford Canal

longboats on the Oxford Canal

My cousin took me on a walk along the Oxford Canal towpath that you get to by crossing a field or two after visiting St. Mary's Church.

It is a walk (not particularly interesting) but about after a mile you come across the little village of Thrupp and the part of the Oxford Canal where the canal longboats traverse.

Where you see the buildings in this picture, just around the corner is an old Public House, so in the summer you can sit and have a drink by the bank of the canal.

There is also a small wooden road bridge that when the boats need to go under, you have to raise by means of a chain.

At this stretch of the canal there is a place to restock, with restrooms,etc, but only for those on the canal boats.
