Lying in the park in summer....
  • Tip Rating:
  • A pleasant thing to do after a nice lunch (Likely to be the pizzeria above the park I am going to talk about) is have a relaxing lie down on the grass or just stroll, sit and enjoy the pretty park below the hotel which Pizza Popular is housed in. Just descending the hill from the main square you'll find it - a grassy area with a lovely large pond complete with gushing fountain, a few select sculptures, and even a kids park on the other side of the pond. You can walk from this park across the grassy area towards the Cesis Brewery (the Baltics' oldest) near the town's Orthodox church. While we rested on the grass here in the blazing sunshine, being intermittantly sprayed by the pond's fountain, which was nice considering the weather, we could see a beautiful rainbow on the surface of the water. It's the little things in life....

  • Directions: Down behind the Pizzeria

A stroll through the old town
  • Tip Rating:
  • Even if you are only passing through Cesis, you should at least stop a while and take a walk through the old town - it's quite unlike anything else in the region. Cesis is in the middle of the Gauja national park - a haven for nature, and next to Riga I think it's one of Latvia's most beautiful towns. As I mentioned on the front page, the old town is made up of long winding alleys, uphill cobbled laneways and a mixture of seemingly dusty, sunfaded buildings and charming medieval facades.
It's a quiet town, with not much to offer restaurant wise, but it's forte is the beautiful buildings on the unexpected uphill streets.

  • Directions: old town Cesis can be explored by walking downhill from the centre square, Veinibas laukums, past St. John's church, and back around the park.

Cesis History and Art Museum in Cesis castle
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the top of the hill of the very beautiful castle park, stands the majestic Cesis Castle - some parts of which you can visit and see contemporary exhibitions. The older, ruined part of the castle is the more historical building, founded in 1209. The newer addition was built circa mid 1700's. In this building, there's also some exhibitions on the history of Cesis. The complex almost sits on the edge of the old town, but as this includes the whole castle, audotorium area, park and lake, one could say it spreads over a larger part of the town.

  • Address: Pils Laukums 9
  • Directions: In the castle square - hard to miss, look for a tall pink tower and stone ruins overlooking a large park close to the main square in Cesis.

    Cesis Medieval Castle
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cesis Medieval Castle was built in the early 13th century by the German "warrior monks" known as the Livonian Order, and the town of Cesis was later built around the castle. Cesis castle was the residence of the Order's Master for over three hundred years.

The castle was severely damaged in several wars, it was rebuilt, fortified and expanded a few times - but during the Great Northern War in 1703 it was almost completely ruined by the Russian army, and never rebuilt.

This is Latvia's best preserved castle ruins - parts of the ruins are currently under restoration, and covered in scaffolding.

The castle is part of Cesis Castle Complex - pay the entrance fee to Cesis Museum of History and Art and you also get to take a closer look at the Medieval Castle.

    Opening hours: Tuesday - Sunday 10 - 18

    Entrance prices:
    Adults: 2 Ls
    Students, Seniors, Children: 1 Ls
    Family (2 adults + children): 4 Ls

Guided tours are available for 15 Ls, or 25 Ls for a tour of both the castle and the Museum of History and Art.

Cesis Museum of History and Art
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cesis Museum of History and Art is situated in the centre of Cesis, by the old castle ruins and the castle garden, which are also part of the Cesis Castle Complex - your entrance ticket to the museum will also allow you to take a closer look at the old castle ruins and the garden.

The museum has since 1949 been located in Cesis New Castle, which was built in the late 18th century at the site of the old castle's defence gates. The museum was founded in 1925, and is one of the oldest museums in Latvia outside of Riga.

Cesis Museum of History and Art is dedicated to the history of the Cesis area - and there's also some local art on display. I honestly didn't find the museum to be all that interesting - perhaps because it was such a lovely, sunny day and I'd rather be outdoors, or perhaps because the displays are in Latvian only...:o) There are fact sheets available in English, though.

But: the view from the top of the castle tower is *excellent* - and the museum is actually worth a visit for the view alone!

    Opening hours: Tuesday - Sunday 10 - 18

    Students, Seniors, Children: 1 Ls
    Family (2 adults + children): 4 Ls

    St. John's Church
  • Tip Rating:
  • This 13th Century church is a striking example of old Livonian buildings of the time. It's steeple can be glimpsed across the rooftops of the old town, and it's windows are an interesting sight. I thought the stained glass was eyecatching - as was the the intricate edging design. (I'm sure there's a better word for that). It's older than most Livonian churches of the region, and also boasts an attractive church door.

  • Directions: In the middle of the old town - and can be spied through an alley on Rigas Iela.

    Song performaces in the ruins
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the summertime there is often song performances in the castle grounds, an activity popular in all the Baltic coutries. In the long summer nights melodies can be heard pealing from the valley of the park - and what a wonderful location to experience such a performance. More to come.

    The Castle Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Castle Park (not to be confused with the Castle Garden, which you can only access when you buy a ticket for the castle complex) is situated, not surprisingly, near the castle ruins... :o) Parts of the old fortification system, a 18-metre high mound, can still be seen in the Castle Park.

The large park was laid out in 1812, with the castle ruins on top of the hill towering above the park. It's a beautiful park, with winding paths among the huge old trees, and a large (but somewhat murky, so don't look too closely at the water;o) pond, with ducks and a couple of swans, which adds to the romantic setting.... :o)

Various events take place in the park during summer.

Jana Baznica - St. John's Church
  • Tip Rating:
  • Jana Baznica, St. John's Church, is the large, grey, slightly tired-looking stone church in the centre of Cesis. St. John's Church was built in the late 13th century, its original Gothic appearance has since been altered, and the current tower dates back to ca 1850. This was the Dome Church of the Livonian Order (aka the German Warrior Monks;o) - which had a major stronghold in Cesis. The tombs of several masters of the Livonian Order are found in the church.

There's a sundial on the southern side of the church.

It's supposed to be possible to climb the church tower, we didn't know this when we visited (Entrance fee 1 Ls adults, 0.50 Ls children) - but you'll get the best view of town (and also of St. John's Church) from The Lademacher Tower, which is part of the Cesis Castle Complex.

    Victory monument
  • Tip Rating:
  • In case you wonder what the large phallic monument is in the middle of the centre square, it's the victory momument - erected (for lack of a better word) in honor of Latvian and Estonian war heroes in 1924. Unfortunately I have no more information on this feature of Cesis - feel free to enlighten me, I'd be delighted.... you wouln't be the first...
