 | Mdina Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 26 | | Popular Restaurants | Other Restaurants Tips | All Tips (26) Renowned for its scrummy cakes - especially chocolate :-)) and its home made pastizzis - little pastries filled with peas or cheese. - we sampled some of each. Indeed we noticed other cafes around Malta advertise cakes as Fontanella cakes ..but its great to sample them in the original location too.

Much has been said already about the Fontanella Tearooms here on VT that is was an obvious choice for a cake and coffee whilst taking in the far reaching views from its rooftop terrace. It was quite windy during our visit - bit too cold to sit out so we were glad they had plenty of space indoors too. There are various other cafes in Mdina tucked behind doorways with quaint courtyards. We peeped into this one which looked intriguing....but couldn't manage another cake in a short space of time..not even me! btw inner courtyards like this feature in many houses as gardens were not permitted in the silent city. This coffee shop is situated on the bastions of Mdina and one can enjoy a great view while sipping coffee/tea with a good cake. Try and avoid this place on Sunday afternoon, this it is always packed with locals
The Choclate cake is the best thing you can try in this place.Lately they have added other cakes too, Almond and bacio are worth trying. The view from this place is also magnificent. Apart from this, do not expect anything special from this place, so be warned. If you are in Mdina, search for the traditional Pastizzi shops. There a couple outisde the walls of Mdina (in Rabat). and here you can taste the best pastizzi in the island while enjoying a good cup of tea or coffee. THese shops are normally frequented by locals, most of them fanatics of horse racing & hunting. A unique experience

Located on the walls of Mdina with an excellent view at the surrounding landscape is the Fontanella Tea Garden. It has super cakes and good Tea/Coffee with it. Don´t forget to have a look at Mdina itself: the architecture is a mixture between arabian an mediterranean elements.

I think Fontanella is fantastic. Our guide book suggested we give it a miss and try the Ciapetti instead, but we didn't and we're glad that we didn't. We loved the place so much we went back again later in the day for more! The Fontanella has a roof garden as well as a shady courtyard and some really cool indoor "open plan" seating areas, so you can take your pick depending on how hot you like to be at dinner!
I had a "garnished pie" - they did a variety and I had cheese & spinach. It was delicious, and a lot bigger than I expected. But that was to be the norm here - everything was bigger than expected! Take a look at the travelogue for more Fontanella Pics.

This is one of the smallest restaurants you’re likely to find on any of your journeys. It’s really cosy and friendly and even if you’re not in the mood for a full meal you should check it out for a drink or two. Opening hours for restaurants and bars are always a bit of a hit-and-miss affair in Malta especially in the afternoon period, so it is good to see that this is one of the few places in the area that is open throughout the entire day and not closed for the afternoons. This is wonderful coffee house located in beautiful location on the walls with a beautiful view from its upper level. I guess it’s the best place for a coffee & cake in this island :) Leave a Comment Theme: CoffeehouseComparison: about average

By far the most popular tea house in this part of the island famous for its delicious homemade cakes and spectacular views of most of Malta from the bastions of Mdina. Can be a bit crowded sometimes especially on Sunday afternoons.
