 | Leiden Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 85 | | Popular Restaurants | Other Restaurants Tips | All Tips (85) Verboden Toegang is Dutch for "No entry" and that is the theme of the restaurant. It is decorated with hundreds of warning signs from all over the world. All the dishes on the menu have names that reflect a prohibition or a punishment of some kind. This is a placed that I had heard a lot about but never had the chance to try out. It is located right off the Rapenburg canal (my favourite in Leiden), so on a nice day, it makes for a great walk. I started with a Carpaccio (aptly named "Red Card"), which was good, but far from being one of the best I have had. My girlfriend had an excellent "Opgerolde bende", lamb ham rolled around green asparagus! I had a very nice filet steak ("Topcrimineel"), which was tender and nicely cooked. Our other choice was not as good, though. The Dutch mini shrimp (hollandse garnaalen) with Avocado and apple were not as good as they should have been. The shrimp were not very tasty and the Avocado was not ripe. Too bad, as it had the potential of being a very nice dish. Service was extremely friendly and all waiters/waitresses were happy and playful. It was, however, quite slow and it took some time for the food to reach our table. Since, as I mentioned, it was a bit slow, we ended up not tasting any of the desserts. This is the kind of restaurant I would call "Dutch". It is quite dark - wooden floor and partly also on the walls - and has that buzzing (loud) feel to it. I like places like this. Prices were a bit steep, but not too exaggerated. We paid 60 Eur for a starter, a main and a couple of drinks (non-alcoholic). This place serves some nice sandwiches and salads. Service can be a bit disappointing, but it is a great spot for a snack after shopping. You can also have a warm meal, but I have never tried it.

If you are in the mood for breakfast, light lunch or justr a snack, this is a nice place to go. There is a rather limited selection of food, mainly bagels with many kinds of "filling". There are also some muffins and you can only get "healthy drinks" (i.e. water or juice) and coffee/tea. The applejuice was excellent, even if bottled. I had a "tuna salad" bagel which was quite good, but I could not help noticing that it is not enough for a person like me (it was lunch). I was in a bit of a hurry so I did not order another, but I might consider doing that the next time. A bagle and a juice will cost you about 7-8 Eur. Service was very friendly, althoug a bit slow and somewhat inefficient. Three bagels took almost 30 minutes... I was also told there is free wireless Internet, so if you bring along your laptop, you can read your while waiting.

I "discovered" Mexican food during my trips to Canada and the US in previous years and ever since I have been searching for a good Mexican restaurant in the Netherlands, preferably in Leiden. So far, I have been unsuccessful. This restaurant is located on th Breestraat, which is very close to where I live, so I decided to give it a try some time ago, however, I was not impressed. Starting with the service, it is not great. The food is not to my liking at all. The food was just not tasty and the torillas they brought were already wrapped and covered in sauce, so they were all wet and soft... The fajitas were really not any good either. I got the feeling some of these courses were frozen meals they just heat up... It is not a horrible place, but it is definelty not somewhere I enjoyed eating at. Leave a Comment

This is a quite nice, quiet, candle-lit restaurant in the center of Leiden. Although there are many things on the menu, we go for the cheese fondue. There are several different kinds, haven't tried them all. Service is good and some attention is paid to detail. I remember the bread being served warm on a piece of wood, with a knife so you can cut it yourself. Overall, I was very pleased.

This is a small Greek "fast food" restaurant that serve some great Pita Giros, which is a pita bread "wrap" with pieces of pork in it. The restaurant itself is small, smoky and only has 2-3 tables inside, but it is great for a quick snack. Be warned that the "pita" is VERY greasy so be careful when eating so you don't make a mess.

I had passed by this restaurant several times and had always beeen curious about it. A few weeks ago, we gave it a try. It is a typical Dutch-style restaurant, wooden walls and furniture with a friendly athmosphere. The only (minor) complaint is that it was VERY warm when we arrived, but as people started leaving it was perfect. The menu is quite varied and original, the names of the dishes are also quite unusual as, for instance "Smoking Robinson" (smoked salmon), "Silence of the Lambs" or "Jack the Spare Ribber". A bit silly, but funny nevertheless. The food is actually very good. I particularly liked the Salmon with saffron rice and the beef (kogelbiefstuk) was also great. Service was very good, waitresses were efficent and friendly. It was funny to find out that our waitress was actually Portuguese :). Desserts were also quite good and value for money is very good. Main courses range from 11 to about 16 Eur and the portions are large enough to leave me satisfied. Update: We have been to this restaurant several times since I originally wrote this tip and can confirm that it is still a very nice place to go to. I added a few dishes the "favourites". Service is still very good and so is the food.
The Rib-eye was excellent (although you should really not eat it if you don't like medium-rare meat - it is a waste) The Ossenhaas (filet) was also excellent and both this dish and the rib-eye were very large, so an excellent choice for hungry meat-lovers. ...could be used to describe this place. I made a reservation for my girlfriend's birthday and asked for a nice table, preferably by the window. I was told it was not available, but I would get a "very nice one"... When we arrived, we were seated at our table, at the very end of the restaurant, in a small, dark room (not cosy or romantic) with three other tables. I would have preferred any other, but the place seemed to be almost full. We then were greeted by a waiter that, although nice and polite, was a bit of a comedian and was always joking, which was fine until things started to go wrong and we were getting a bit upset. It took about 15 minutes before we got the actual menu, an additional 30-40 minutes to get (one!) starter and the main course took almost another one hour!!! In total, we spent 2h45m to eat one starter, two main courses and and a small dessert. I was enjoying the company, but this is a bit too long for my taste. The restaurant was a bit pretentious as it was supposed to be classy but then we had dirty glasses and the bottle cooler was all dirty as well. There was also a dog sitting right next to the cutlery (nothing against animals, I just don't like to eat their hair). At a certain point, the waiter came and poured the water in my glass and he dropped the bottle cap on the floor. He picked it up and but it back on the bottle!!! This is not supposed to happen. My girlfriend wanted some wine to go with the main course. We managed to finish it completely(!) before the waiter came with the wine. At this stage, she said she did not wanted it anymore and the waiter started asking "not even a little bit? Come on, just a sip!". Believe me, it was even more ridiculous than it sounds. To top things off, we were sitting next to three tables of loud-speaking people (I think they were all business meetings) that would answer their mobile phones at the table, after they had been ringing at least for 30 seconds (it happen 3-4 times). I guess this kind of restaurant will attract this kind of people.
In the end, I did not like the table, the people around us were really annoying, when that was not enough the waiter was there to "help" and the food, although good, was definetly not worth the money. The three dishes we had (spicy avocado sallad with shrimps, St. Pierre fish and beef filet) were good, but not good enough to justify the price. Starters are 9 or 11 Eur, main courses 20 and desserts 9 Eur. We paid 60 Eur for one starter, 2 main courses and drinks. Leave a Comment

This restaurant is located right next door to where I live and for about 3 years I decided to ignore it based on my first experience about 4 years ago. In the meantime, the owner has changed, so there is no point in going into detail on that. One day, I came home and was not in the mood to cook, so I decided to give the take-away pizza a try. I was actually very pleasantly surprised! The ingredients were of very good quality (real mozzarella, for instance) and it was baked as I like it with a thin, but not too thin, crust. After that, I have become a regular. Another good going is that all take-away pizza's cost 7.5 Eur, no matter what the menu price is! A few weeks ago, I decided to eat at the restaurant and I must say I was disappointed. The service was VERY slow although there were only 3 tables with people. When I order out I get the pizza in 10 min (the most I have waited was 15), here it took more than half an hour. My friend ordered a soup that took more than 20 minutes to arrive. Same story with the dessert. In their defense, the quality of the food was good and both the waitress and the owner were very friendly (the owner, who also makes the pizza, is always very friendly). I also noticed that they only have Barilla pasta in the kitchen and that is always a good sign, even though I have never eaten pasta there. I also think it was a bit expensive. As I mentioned, take-away pizzas are always the same price, but not the ones on the menu, so we ended up paying about 20 Eur per person, which I think is a bit too much for a pizza, dessert and drinks. In short - great for take away, but there are better options if you want to eat out. I think they also deliver.
All pizza's are good. NOTE: The satisfaction rating is mainly based on the take-away and the price is for a meal at the restaurant Leave a Comment Theme: ItalianPrice: US$21-30 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Boommarkt 2Phone: 071 - 512 02 38Directions: Number 15 on the map. This restaurant is located right next to "Oudt Leyden" (see tip), but is not quite as good. It is a fairly recent restaurant (about 2 years old), it used to be a cafe/pastry shop, so it is very modern and although I am sure some people will find the decor nice, it does not please me very much, Each table has a miniature frying pan with a button inside that you can use to call for a waiter - I am sure they are very happy to have children over. This can be quite useful, especially in Leiden, although I don't like it very much. Attention is paid to details such as the syrup to put on the pancakes, which is contained in a Delft blue (imitation) jar with a wooden spoon to serve it. Service is very nice, with very friendly and efficient waitresses. So, why don't I like it, you might ask. Well, the pancakes are not great, they are too thick for my taste and quite dry as well. Friends that have tried it are of the same opinion. Overall, it is definitely not a bad place, it is just that there is a better restaurant next door that serves exactly the same food...
