In 1971 Burgers' zoo and the university of Utrecht brought together a group of chimpanzees on a large island. Till that time that wasn't done. It was new , because zoo's considered these animals as dangerous. They where mostly kept alone or as a couple in small cages. The beginning was hard for the group. None of the animals where used living in a social group. Especially raising up the youngster . It is so that how smarter an animal is how more they have to learn. Young chimpanzees learn from there mother and other groupmembers how to raise a baby. When the group had their 25th birthday a little book was published with funny storys that had happened during this period. -Altough Arnhem chimpanzees have lived in a group from around 30 animals , they do know each others names. When the keepers shouts a name to throw some food at the chimps , the others move fast to sit near that animal. -there was an experiment going on , the chimps had to place different volumes on each other to reach for some food. When the saw where the food was coming from , they simply had build a bridge over the water. Please read 'chimpanseepolitiek' 'chimps politics' by Frans de Waal , a highly readable book with a family saga in it - completely based on the research of the Arnhem chimp group. Leave a Comment

Being almost completely destroyed during the war, the Chruch was rebuilt and it's tower now rises to the high of 93 meters. This is the only tower in the Netherlands that you don't have to climb by foot. The glass elevator will take you up there in less than a minute. Then you'll be able to observe the beauty of Arhnem and especially the Rhine valley. Don't miss this attraction, after all you don't have to work hard to get up there. Open hours are Tue-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun noon-5pm, closed on Mondays Leave a Comment Address: Kerkplein 1Phone: 026-443-5068Directions: Once you're in the city center there's no chance that you gonna miss it!

The Market Garden plan got 10,000 men to the mission of capturing bridges over the rivers Rhine, Maas ,and Waal which were held by Germans and it was "a bridge too far". In September 17 1944 the British 2nd parachutists battalion of Lt. Colonel John Frost arrived to the bridge ( now called the John Frost Bridge) which they were suppose to defense for 48 hours ,then other troops would arrive too. Unfortunately it wasn’t a successful battle and the expected help never made it to Arnhem. After four days of the battle a very few soldiers that survived became prisoners. The bridge you see now is the same bridge. Every year veterans are coming to Arnhem and Oosterbook for the commemoration. Read the story of battle of Arnhem written by John Frost, who survived the war and returned home in the Spring of 1945. John Frost's story (click General and then Battle of Arnhem) Leave a Comment

Would you like to see how Dutch people were living a few hundreds of years ago? Then you should definitely visit the Open Air Museum of Arnhem. This huge place will keep you busy for the whole day, so make sure you arrive there early in the morning. You’ll see old fashioned houses, still working windmills, will be able to play old Dutch games, to ride funny shaped bicycles, and to enjoy real Dutch beer. The Museum is only open April-late October, 10 am to 5pm daily Leave a Comment Address: Schelmseweg 89, ArnhemPhone: 026 357 61 00Directions: Follow the signs to Arnhem Noord/Openluchtmuseum (exit 26). Or take bus number 3 from Arnhem station, towards Alteveer. A fast service runs in the summer (line 13).Website: www.openluchtmuseum.nl

Johan Burgers had an pheasant collection in the beginning of last century...in 1923 his collection became to big for 's-heerenberg and he decided to move to Arnhem. Burgers zoo has always been a progressive zoo. It had the first big cats enclosure in the Netherlands without bar. In 1968 the first safaripark in the European mainland was opened, in 1971 the chimpanzee island... In the eighties a new way of displaying animals became popular. A few animals together from the same area in a larger enclosure. 1988 the Bush and in 1994 Burgers desert opened. Recently there was also an ocean added... But please keep on reading if we are going to take a closer look at the exhibits... Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla is the scientific name of this species. The gorillas shown in Burgers' are western lowland gorillas and the most ommon. habitat : they live in the forest of west africa. They are highly endangered. In Arnhem when i visited there was a group of 7 individuals. One dominant male and 3 females with their youngsters. The group is doing well. They got a spacious island outside where you can admire them when you are in a cage. Here the male is often find near the public. He is more the macho type of man and he doesn't like his females to be too close near the public and the windows. A great opportunity to take pictures.
