On the lake there are more birds: swans, sea-gulls, ducks and so on. Take a some of bread for the swans, but be careful - they can be very dengerous if they feel menaced. Leave a Comment Address: on the lake

One of the unusual features in Gizycko is the swing bridge that spans the Luczanski Canal. When it was first constructed in the 1850’s it had 2 arms but accident caused them to collapse in 1859. The bridge was reconstructed in 1889 using a single arm 20m long and with its gears mechanism one person could operate it. In the 1960’s the bridge was modernised and an electric motor added, this proved to be a disaster with the bridge hitting the bank with too greater force. A temporary bridge replaced it but it was not liked and in 1993 a single arm swing bridge returned the same as the one from 1889. The bridge is unique and is one of only a few in Europe. If you read the guidebooks it will tell you that Gizycko was flattened during WW2 and there is nothing there but grey architecture. As I discovered there are some flamboyant and unusual houses along side the Luczanski Canal. Leave a Comment Directions: Along the Luczanski Canal

One of the boat trips, and the one I took, and as the name suggests, takes you to Cormorants' Island, where you can observe a large amount of cormorants in a small area. Leave a Comment

The Boyen Fortress is an excellent example of Prussian fortification that dates from 1844 and was built on isthmus between Lake Kisajno and Lake Niegocin, and covers 100 hectares. It was constructed to protect Prussia against Russia and also to protect the route to Konigsberg. The fort is an irregular shape with 6 bastions, a large courtyard and triangular ramparts. By WW2 the fortress formed a small part of a huge defensive system that protected the area. The fort was used as a military hospital and prison for political prisoners during WW2 and then by the Polish Army after the war ended. Leave a Comment Address: Turystyczna
